entered the house and ate from the banquet, whereas whoever failed to respond to the caller neither entered the house nor partook of the banquet.
They said, “Explain it to him so that he may understand.” Some of them said, “He is asleep,” while others said, “The eyes may sleep, yet the heart is awake.”
They then said, “The house is Paradise, and the caller is Muhammad ﷺ. Whoever obeys Muhammad has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys Muhammad has disobeyed Allah. Muhammad is the dividing line among the people.” (1)
Al-Tirmidhi also narrated this hadith, with the wording:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once came out to us and said:
‘I saw in a dream as though Gabriel was at my head and Michael at my feet. One of them said to the other, “Strike for him a parable.” He said, “Let your ear hear and your heart understand: Your likeness and the likeness of your community is that of a king who built a dwelling, then constructed a house within it, then prepared a banquet, and then sent a messenger to invite the people to his food. Some of them answered the messenger and some refused. Allah is the King, the dwelling is Islam, the house is Paradise, and you, O Muhammad, are the Messenger of Allah. Whoever responds to you enters Islam; whoever enters Islam enters Paradise; and whoever enters Paradise will eat of what is in it.”’ (2)
Al-Tirmidhi likewise reported a similar version from Ibn Masʿud and declared it sound as well (3).
Hammad ibn Salamah narrated—from Thabit, from Anas—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“A master built a house, prepared a banquet, and sent out a caller. Whoever answered the caller entered the house, ate from the banquet, and the master was pleased with him. Verily, the master is Allah, the house is Islam, the banquet is Paradise, and the caller is Muhammad ﷺ.” (4)
Abu Yaʿla said: Abu Khaythamah related to us, Jarir narrated to us, from Yunus—namely Ibn Khabbab (5)—from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“No servant ever seeks refuge from the Fire seven times but the Fire says, ‘My Lord, Your servant so-and-so has sought refuge from me, so grant him refuge’; and no servant ever asks Allah for Paradise seven times but Paradise says, ‘My Lord, Your servant so-and-so has asked for me, so admit him into Paradise.’” Its chain of transmission meets the criteria of Muslim (6).
Al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasaʾi, and Ibn Majah also narrated—through Hannad, from Abu al-Ahwas, from Abu Ishaq, from Burayd ibn Abi Maryam, from Anas—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times, Paradise says…” (7)
