He said:
“Whoever deliberately forges a lie against me, let him take his seat in the Fire.” (1)
Al-Bukhārī said: “Qays ibn Ḥafṣ narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAmr al-Fuqaymī, from Mujāhid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
‘Whoever kills a muʿāhad—someone bound to the Muslims by treaty—shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, although its fragrance can be perceived from a distance of forty years.’”
Ibn Mājah reported the same ḥadith through Abū Kurayb, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAmr with this chain. (2)
Imām Aḥmad said: “Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad, meaning Abū Ibrāhīm al-Muʿaqqib, narrated to us; Marwān—namely Ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazārī—narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAmr al-Fuqaymī [from Mujāhid], from Junādah ibn Abī Umayyah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Whoever kills a person from among the ahl al-dhimmah (non-Muslim subjects under Muslim protection) shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, even though its fragrance can be perceived from a distance of forty years.’”
Al-Nasāʾī transmitted it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm Duhaym, from Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazārī, with the same chain. Al-Ṭabarānī likewise reported it from Mūsā ibn Khāzim (3) al-Aṣbahānī, from Muḥammad ibn Bukayr (4) al-Ḥaḍramī, from Marwān al-Fazārī, from al-Ḥasan, from Mujāhid, from Junādah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Whoever kills a person from among the ahl al-dhimmah shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, even though its fragrance can be perceived from a distance of one hundred years.’ This is his exact wording. (5)
Al-Ṭabarānī also said: “Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Abbār narrated to us; Muʿallal ibn Nufayl (6) narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us, from ʿAwf al-Aʿrābī, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Whoever unlawfully kills a muʿāhad soul shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, although its fragrance can be perceived from a distance of one hundred years.’”
Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī likewise transmitted it through Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, in a marfūʿ report, with the wording:
“Seventy autumns,”
and al-Tirmidhī commented: “Ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ,” adding: “There is also a report on this subject from Abū Bakrah.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Ḍiyāʾ said: “In my judgement, the ḥadith of Abū Hurayrah meets the criteria of authenticity.” (7)
ʿAbd al-Razzāq reported from Maʿmar, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan—or someone else—from Abū Bakrah, who said: “I heard …”
