enjoy perfect health and never fall ill, remain forever young and never grow old, and revel in bliss and never experience misery.” He then added, “That is the meaning of Allah’s words: “It will be proclaimed, ‘This is the Garden you have been made to inherit because of what you used to do.’ ” (Q 7:43). Muslim also transmitted the report from Ishaq ibn Rahwayh and ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, both through ʿAbd al-Razzaq, with a similar wording.⦗1⦘
Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr al-Bazzar said, “Al-Fadl ibn Yaʿqub narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Firyabi narrated to us; from Sufyan—meaning al-Thawri—from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, who said: It was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, do the people of Paradise sleep?’ He replied, ‘No. Sleep is the sister of death.’ Al-Bazzar then remarked, ‘We do not know anyone who related it on the authority of Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir from Jabir except al-Thawri, nor anyone who linked the chain except al-Firyabi.’ ”
Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr ibn Marduyah said: “Ahmad ibn al-Qasim ibn Ṣadaqah al-Misri narrated to us; al-Miqdam ibn Dawud narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mughīrah narrated to us; Sufyan al-Thawri narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Sleep is the sister of death, and the people of Paradise do not sleep.’ ”
Al-Tabarani likewise recorded it through the chain of Musʿab ibn Ibrahim, from ʿImran ibn Rabiʿ al-Kufi, from Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Ansari, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, ‘Do the people of Paradise sleep?’ He answered, ‘Sleep is the sister of death, and the people of Paradise do not sleep.’ ”
Al-Bayhaqi reported the same through ʿAbd Allah ibn Jabalah⦗2⦘ ibn Abi Rawwad, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, and mentioned the report in full.⦗3⦘
Al-Bayhaqi then narrated—from al-Hakim, from al-Asamm, from ʿAbbas al-Duri, from Yunus ibn Muhammad, from Saʿid ibn Zarbi, from Nufayʿ ibn al-Harith, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Awfa—who said: “A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ‘Sleep is one of the comforts with which Allah soothes our eyes in this world; shall we sleep in Paradise?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘Death is the companion of sleep, and there is no death in Paradise.’ They asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, then what will be their repose?’ He said, ‘There is no exhaustion there; every aspect of their life is ease.’ Then Allah the Exalted revealed: ‘No fatigue will touch us therein, nor will weariness befall us.’ (Q 35:35).
