when they utter these words, the believing women of this world will answer them:
“We are the ones who performed the prayers, whereas you never prayed; we are the ones who fasted, whereas you never fasted; we are the ones who performed ablution, whereas you never did; and we are the ones who gave charity, whereas you never gave charity.”
ʿĀʾishah said, “So they will prevail over them—and Allah knows best.” Al-Qurṭubī reports it thus in al-Tadhkirah, without assigning it to any specific work; and Allah knows best.
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā transmits—through al-Zuhrī—that in Paradise there are trees (1) whose produce is pearls and emeralds. Beneath them are youthful maidens who chant the Quran. They say:
“We are the blissful ones—never shall we suffer hardship;
we are the everlasting ones—never shall we die;
we are the settled ones—never shall we depart.”
When the trees hear this, their branches clap against one another, whereupon the maidens respond in turn, so that it is unclear whether the voices of the maidens are lovelier or the sound of the trees’ applause (2).
In the report of Khālid ibn Yazīd it is stated that on the breast of one of them is written: “You are my beloved and I am your beloved; my soul has come to rest with you; my eyes shall never behold anyone like you.” (3)
Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr said: The ḥūr al-ʿīn will meet their husbands at the gates of Paradise (4) and will say, in the most melodious voices (5): “We have waited so long for you! We are the contented ones—never shall we be displeased; the resident ones—never shall we depart; the everlasting ones—never shall we die.”
[A discussion on the intimacy of the people of Paradise with their wives: no semen and no children, unless one of them should wish for a child.]
Allah the Exalted says:
“Indeed, today the people of Paradise are busy, rejoicing; (55)
—they and their spouses—reclining on couches in the shade. (56)
For them therein is fruit, and for them is whatever they request. (57)
‘Peace!’—a word from a Merciful Lord.” (58) [Ya Sīn 55-58]
Ibn Masʿūd, Ibn ʿAbbās, and others said that their “occupation” (shughl) is the deflowering of virgins.
And He, Most High, says:
“Surely the God-fearing will be in a secure place, (51)
within gardens and springs; (52)
clothed in silk and rich brocade, facing one another. (53)
So it shall be, and We shall wed them to wide-eyed houris. (54)
There they will call for every kind of fruit, in perfect safety. (55)
They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will shield them from the punishment of the Blazing Fire— (56)
as a bounty from your Lord; that is the supreme triumph.” [Ad-Dukhān 51-56]
