of Paradise were to look down upon the inhabitants of the earth, she would fill the whole world with the scent of musk and would eclipse the light of the sun and the moon. (1)
Reports on the Singing of the ḥūr al-ʿīn in Paradise
Al-Tirmidhī and others transmit—through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Saʿd, from ʿAlī—who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
“In Paradise there is indeed a gathering for the ḥūr al-ʿīn. They will raise voices the like of which no creature has ever heard, chanting:
‘We are the everlasting ones; we shall never perish.
We are the blissful ones; we shall never know misery.
We are the content ones; we shall never be displeased.
Glad tidings to him who belongs to us and to whom we belong.’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī commented: “A similar report is narrated from Abū Hurayrah, Abū Saʿīd, and Anas; the ḥadith of ʿAlī is gharīb.” (2)
Ibn Abī Dhīb related—from ʿAwn ibn al-Khaṭṭāb ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rāfiʿ (3), from a son of Anas ibn Mālik, from his father—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Truly, the ḥūr sing in Paradise, saying:
‘We are the graceful, beautiful maidens,
created for noble husbands.’ ” (4)
Al-Ṭabarānī said: Abū Rifāʿah ʿUmārah ibn Wathīmah ibn Mūsā ibn al-Furāt al-Miṣrī told us; Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam told us; Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Kathīr told us; from Zayd ibn Aslam; from Ibn ʿUmar, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The wives of the people of Paradise will sing to their husbands with the sweetest voices anyone has ever heard. Among the verses they sing are:
‘We are the goodly, beautiful ones,
consorts of an honorable people,
who gaze with eyes of cool delight.’
And among what they sing is:
‘We are the everlasting ones—never shall we die;
We are the secure ones—never shall we fear;
We are the abiding ones—never shall we depart.’ ” (5)
Al-Layth ibn Saʿd reported—from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb (6), from al-Walīd ibn ʿAbdah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Gabriel: “Take me to the ḥūr al-ʿīn.” Gabriel therefore presented him to them. The Prophet asked, “Who are you?” They replied, “We are the maidens of a people who settled and never moved on, who became youthful and never grew old, and who were purified so that no impurity ever touched them.” (7)
After citing the foregoing ḥadith about the singing of the ḥūr al-ʿīn, al-Qurṭubī said: “ʿĀʾishah stated: ‘Indeed, the ḥūr al-ʿīn…’”
