Ibn Wahb also related, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, that he said: “By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity, if one of the ḥūr al-ʿīn (wide-eyed maidens of Paradise) were to let merely her bracelet protrude from beneath the Throne, the brilliance of that bracelet would eclipse the light of the sun and the moon—so what, then, of the beauty of the one who wears it? The shabbiest garment she may ever put on is better than the whole world and all it contains, and her husband will be clothed in garments and ornaments like hers.”
Abū Hurayrah said: “In Paradise there is a maiden named al-ʿAynāʾ. When she walks, seventy thousand youthful servants walk around her, and she proclaims, ‘Where are those who enjoined what is right and forbade what is wrong?’” Al-Qurṭubī recorded both of these reports.
Al-Ṭabarānī stated: Ahmad ibn Rashdīn narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Hārūn al-Anṣārī narrated to us; al-Layth—the grandson of al-Layth ibn Abī Sulaym—told me; ʿĀʾishah bint Yūnus, the wife of al-Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, told me; from al-Layth ibn Abī Sulaym; from Mujāhid; from Abū Umāmah; from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“Indeed, the ḥūr al-ʿīn were created from saffron.” (1)
This ḥadith is classified as gharīb. Something similar has been reported from Ibn ʿAbbās and others among the Companions and Successors as their own statements.
In the mursal narrations of ʿIkrimah it is related that the ḥūr al-ʿīn pray for their husbands while those husbands are still in the worldly life, saying: “O Allah, aid him to remain steadfast upon Your religion, turn his heart toward obedience to You (2), and bring him to us by Your might, O Most Merciful of the merciful (3).”
In the Musnad of Imām Aḥmad, in the ḥadith of Kathīr ibn Murrah from Muʿādh, raised to the Prophet ﷺ:
“No woman harms her husband in this world except that his wife from among the ḥūr al-ʿīn says, ‘Do not harm him—may Allah fight you—for he is but a guest with you; soon he will part from you and come to us.’”
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā likewise narrated it, through Dāwūd ibn ʿAmr al-Ḍabbī, from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, from Buḥayr ibn Saʿd, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from Kathīr ibn Murrah, from Muʿādh ibn Jabal, from the Prophet ﷺ,… and he mentioned the ḥadith (4).
Al-Ṭabarānī, in his Muʿjam, records—through the chain of Mūsā al-Ṣaghīr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sābiṭ, from Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir ibn Ḥidhyam—that the latter once gave ten thousand dirhams in charity in a single day. His wife reproached him for this, whereupon he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘If a ḥawrāʾ (maid of Paradise) were to reveal just one of her fingers, every creature possessing a soul would perceive its fragrance.’ Then he added, ‘Shall I leave them for your sake? No, by Allah—you are the ones I should forsake for them!’” (5)
And in a report transmitted by Mālik ibn Dīnār, through Shahr, from Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir, raised to the Prophet ﷺ: “If a woman from among the women of the people …”
