saying, “My Lord, this man showed me the finest conduct toward me in the worldly abode, so unite me with him.” O Umm Salamah, it is good character that has won the best of this world and the next. (1)
Muhammad ibn ʿUthmān (2) ibn Abī Shaybah said: Ahmad ibn Ṭāriq narrated to us; Masʿadah ibn al-Yasaʿ narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from ʿĀʾishah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was approached by an elderly woman from the Anṣār who said, “O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to admit me into Paradise.” He replied, “No old woman will enter Paradise.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then went and prayed, after which he returned to ʿĀʾishah. She said, “That old woman has suffered distress because of what you told her.” He said, “Such is the case: when Allah admits them into Paradise He will turn them into virgins.” (3)
Earlier, in the ḥadith of the Trumpet concerning the believers’ entry into Paradise, it is stated: “A man among them will be given seventy-two wives—seventy of those whom Allah, exalted is He, creates anew, and two from the children of Adam who hold a rank above the newly created ones because they worshipped Allah in the world. He will enter upon the first of them in a chamber of ruby, upon a couch of gold adorned with pearls, sheathed in seventy garments of fine silk and brocade. He will place his hand between her shoulders and will see it through her chest, through her clothes, skin, and flesh; he will behold the marrow of her shin as one of you looks at a thread through a tube of ruby. His liver will be a mirror for her and her liver a mirror for him. While he is with her he will neither tire of her nor will she tire of him; each time he comes to her he finds her a virgin. His organ never slackens and her organ never complains, yet there is no ejaculation and no end of life. While he is with her a caller will announce, ‘We know that you do not weary and are not wearied, but you have other wives as well.’ He will then go to them one by one, and every time he comes to one of them she will say, ‘By Allah, there is nothing in Paradise more beautiful than you, and nothing in Paradise is dearer to me than you.’” This ḥadith has numerous supporting chains that have preceded and will follow, Allah willing, and in Him we place our trust.
Also mentioned earlier is the report recorded by Imām Ahmad, related by Ashʿath al-Ḍarīr from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, in which he said: “Indeed he will have from among the ḥūr al-ʿīn two and seventy wives in addition to his wives from the world, and a single one of them would occupy a space on earth the length of a mile.” (4)
Harmalah narrated from Ibn Wahb: ʿAmr related to us that Darrāj Abū al-Samḥ informed him, from Abū al-Haytham, from Abū Saʿīd, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “The lowest person in rank among the inhabitants of Paradise is the one who has eighty thousand servants and seventy-two…"
