Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

In the Two Ṣaḥīḥs, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār from Abū Saʿīd, it is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“On the Day of Resurrection the whole earth will become a single loaf of bread, which the Compeller will turn over in His Hand just as one of you turns over his loaf while on a journey; it will be a welcoming provision for the people of Paradise.”

A man from the Jews then came and said, “May the All-Merciful bless you, O Abū al-Qāsim. Shall I inform you of the hospitality prepared for the people of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection?” He replied, “Indeed.” The man said, “The earth will be a single loaf of bread on that Day.” He added, “Shall I tell you what their relish will be?” He said, “Yes.” The man said, “Their relish will be balām and nūn.” He asked, “What are those?” He answered, “An ox and a giant fish, from the extra piece of whose livers seventy thousand people will eat.” (1)

Al-Aʿmash narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Murrah, from Masrūq, from Ibn Masʿūd regarding the verse, “They will be given to drink a sealed nectar (25) whose seal is musk” (al-Mutaffifīn 83:25–26). He said: ar-raḥīq means wine, and makhtūm means that they will find its after-taste to be the fragrance of musk. (2)

Sufyān narrated from ʿAṭāʾ ibn as-Sāʾib, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās about the verse, “and its mixture will be of tasnīm” (al-Mutaffifīn 83:27): Tasnīm is the most exalted drink of the people of Paradise; those brought near will drink it pure, and it will be mixed from it for the people of the right.

I say: Allah has described the wine of Paradise with fair and splendid qualities never found in the filthy wines of this world. He mentioned that they are flowing rivers, as He said: “and rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and rivers of purified honey” (Muḥammad 47:15). These are running rivers, fed by springs that gush forth from beneath mountains of musk, not pressed under the feet of coarse men in the vilest of conditions. He also declared that it is a delight to those who drink it, unlike worldly wine with its repulsive taste, its damaging effect on the mind, stomach cramps, and headaches. Allah has purified the people of Paradise from all of that and purified their wine so that none of it remains.

He said: “Round will be passed to them a cup from a flowing spring (45) white, delicious to the drinkers (46) wherein there is no harm and from which they will not be intoxicated” (as-Ṣāffāt 37:45–47). “White” means fair in appearance; “delicious to the drinkers” means pleasant in taste; “no harm in it”—al-ghawl—is stomach pain; “nor will they be intoxicated” means it does not take away their minds. The purpose of wine is the joyous exhilaration that brings happiness to the soul, and this is attained by the wine of Paradise. As for the loss of intellect whereby the drinker becomes like an animal or a madman, that is a defect found only in the wine of this world. The wine of Paradise produces none of this; rather, it brings joy and delight. Hence He said: “there is no harm in it, nor will they be intoxicated”—that is, their minds will not be drained away entirely because of drinking it.

And He said in another verse: “There will circulate among them eternal youths (17) with cups, pitchers, and a cup from a flowing spring (18) that will cause them no headache nor will they …”
