become belches like the exudation of musk.
Al-Bazzār added: It is also transmitted from al-Aʿmash, through Abū Sufyān, but Abū Sufyān is not proven to have heard it directly from him, whereas his hearing from Abū Ṣāliḥ is authentic.
A variety of other narrations
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah said:
Khalaf ibn Khalīfah narrated to us, from Ḥumayd al-Aʿraj, from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, “You will gaze at a bird and long for it, and it will fall before you fully roasted.” (1)
[Imam Aḥmad] said:
ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Fulayḥ, from Hilāl ibn ʿAlī, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abū Hurayrah:
One day, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was speaking and a Bedouin was present, he said:
“A man from the people of Paradise will ask his Lord—exalted is He—for permission to plant crops. Allah will say, ‘Are you not already in whatever you desire?’ He will reply, ‘Yes, but I love to cultivate.’
“So he will sow the seed, and before the eye can blink it will sprout, grow tall and ripen, then be harvested in sheaves as huge as mountains.
“Then his Lord—exalted is He—will say to him, ‘Here you are, son of Adam! Nothing ever satisfies you.’”
At this the Bedouin remarked, “By Allah, this can only be a Qurashī or an Anṣārī, for they are the people of tillage; as for us, we are not farmers.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed.
Al-Bukhārī likewise recorded it from Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr with this chain. (2)
Mention of the first food the people of Paradise will eat after entering it
Imam Aḥmad related—from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah, from Ḥumayd—and al-Bukhārī also brought it through his chain—from Anas:
When ʿAbd Allah ibn Salām questioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon the Prophet’s arrival in Madinah, he asked among other things, “What will be the first meal the people of Paradise eat?” He replied, “The caudate lobe of a whale’s liver.” (3)
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, through the narration of Abū Asmāʾ from Thawbān:
A Jew asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “What is their welcome gift when they enter Paradise?” He said, “The extra piece of a whale’s liver.”
He asked, “What will be their meal after that?” He said, “A bull of Paradise that grazes along its borders will be slaughtered for them.”
He asked, “And what will they drink with it?” He said, “From a spring called Salsabīl.”
The man replied, “You have spoken the truth.” (4)
