Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

I heard Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ say:

“In Paradise there is a tree whose shade a mounted rider could traverse for one hundred years without reaching the end of it.” (1)

[The Tree of Immortality]
Imām Aḥmad said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar and Ḥajjāj narrated to us; they said: Shuʿbah narrated to us; I heard Abū al-Ḍaḥḥāk relate from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Indeed, in Paradise there is a tree whose shade a rider may travel under for seventy—or one hundred—years; it is the Tree of Immortality.” (2)

[The Tree of Ṭūbā]
Imām Aḥmad said: ʿAlī ibn Baḥr narrated to us; Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from ʿĀmir ibn Zayd al-Bikālī, who said that he heard ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd as-Sulamī say:

A Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about the ḥawḍ (the Prophet’s Basin), and he mentioned Paradise. The Bedouin said, “Will it contain fruit?” He replied, “Yes—and in it there is a tree called Ṭūbā.” The narrator then mentioned something I do not recall. The Bedouin asked, “Which tree in our land does it resemble?” He answered, “It does not resemble any of the trees of your land.”

The Prophet ﷺ then asked, “Have you ever been to al-Shām (Greater Syria)?” He said, “No.” He replied, “It is like a tree in al-Shām called al-jawzah; it grows from a single trunk and its top spreads wide.”

The Bedouin asked, “How large is its trunk?” He said, “If you were to set out on a strong young she-camel from your family, you would not circle its base before the camel’s collar-bone snapped from old age.”

He asked, “Does it bear grapes?” He replied, “Yes.”

He asked, “How large is a single cluster?” He said, “A pied crow could fly for a month without tiring before reaching its end.”

He asked, “And how large is one grape?” He said, “Has your father ever slaughtered a large he-goat from his flock?” He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “Did he skin it and hand the hide to your mother saying, ‘Make us a bucket from it’?” He replied, “Yes.”

The Bedouin said, “Would one of those grapes satisfy me and the people of my household?” He answered, “Yes—and most of your clan as well.” (3)

Ḥarmalah reported from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb: ʿAmr informed me that Darrāj narrated to him that Abū al-Haytham narrated to him from Abū Saʿīd, from the Prophet ﷺ:

A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, Ṭūbā for the one who has seen you and believed in you!” He replied, “Ṭūbā for the one who sees me and believes in me; and Ṭūbā—then again Ṭūbā—for the one who believes in me without having seen me.”

A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is Ṭūbā?” He said, “It is a tree in Paradise that a rider would need one hundred years to traverse; the garments of the people of Paradise issue forth from its buds.” (4)

(1) Reported by Ahmad in al-Musnad (vol. 2, p. 469); its chain of transmission is authentic. (2) Reported by Ahmad in al-Musnad (vol. 2, p. 455); its chain is weak, though it is strengthened by corroborating reports, except for the phrase “Shajarat al-Khuld” (Tree of Eternity). (3) Reported by Ahmad in al-Musnad (vol. 4, pp. 183–184); it is a hasan (good) hadith. (4) Also reported by Ahmad in al-Musnad (vol. 3, p. 71) via the narration of Darraj; its chain is weak. However, the statement “Tubā liman raʾānī wa āmana bī, thumma tubā liman āmana bī wa lam yarānī” (“Blessed is he who saw me and believed in me; then blessed is he who believed in me though he did not see me”) is authentic and is supported by corroborating evidence.
