Mention of the Rivers of Paradise, its Trees, and its Fruits
Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“Beneath which rivers flow.” ⦗98:8⦘
And He says: “Beneath them rivers flow.” ⦗18:31⦘
He also says: “The likeness of the Garden promised to the God-fearing: in it are rivers of water never stagnant, rivers of milk whose taste does not change, rivers of wine delightful to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey. There they shall have every kind of fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord.” ⦗47:15⦘
And He says: “The likeness of the Garden promised to the God-fearing: rivers flow beneath it; its produce is everlasting and so is its shade. Such is the outcome for those who are mindful of Allah, whereas the outcome for the disbelievers is the Fire.” ⦗13:35⦘
Imam Ahmad said: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; al-Jurayrī informed us; Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah Abū Bahz, from his father, reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“In Paradise there is a sea of milk, a sea of water, a sea of honey, and a sea of wine; thereafter the rivers branch off from them.”
Al-Tirmidhī likewise related it—from Bundār, from Yazīd ibn Hārūn—and declared it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also recorded it—from Abū Khaythamah, from Yazīd ibn Hārūn—with this same chain (1).
Abū Bakr ibn Mardawayh said: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Nuʿmān narrated to us; Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUbayd Abū Qudāmah al-Iyādī narrated to us; Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī, from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qays, from his father, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“These rivers gush forth into the Garden of Eden, into a basin, (2) and thereafter burst forth as rivers.” (3)
Ibn Mardawayh also said: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Abī [Muḥammad] Yaḥyā narrated to us; Mahdī ibn Ḥakīm narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; al-Jurayrī informed me, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurra, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
“Perhaps you imagine that the rivers of Paradise are trenches cut into the earth. By Allah, they flow over the surface of the land; their banks are domes of pearl, and their soil is misk al-adhfar (pure musk).”
It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is al-adhfar?” He replied:
“That which is completely unmixed.”
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā likewise transmitted it—from Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUbayd, from Yazīd ibn Hārūn—with the same chain, but as a mawqūf report (4).
Al-Bayhaqī also narrated—[through al-Ḥākim and others, from al-Aṣamm, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Sulaymān]—from Asad ibn
