Enumerating the abodes of Paradise, its height, and its breadth
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“For those who feared standing before their Lord there are two gardens (46); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (47) Both of them are filled with luxuriant branches (48); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (49) In each of them are two flowing springs (50); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (51) In each of them is every fruit in pairs (52); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (53) They recline there upon couches whose linings are of brocade, while the harvest of the two gardens hangs low and near (54); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (55) In them are maidens of restrained gaze, untouched before them by any human or jinn (56); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (57) They are like rubies and coral (58); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (59) Is the recompense of goodness anything but goodness? (60); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (61) And beneath these two are still another two gardens (62); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (63) dark-green and luxuriant (64); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (65) In them are two gushing springs (66); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (67) In them are fruit, date-palms, and pomegranates (68); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (69) In them are good and beautiful women (70); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (71) ḥūr secluded in pavilions (72); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (73) Untouched before them by any human or jinn (74); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (75) Reclining on green cushions and exquisite carpets (76); so which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (77) Blessed is the Name of your Lord, Possessor of Majesty and Honour. (78)” ⦗al-Raḥmān: 46–78⦘
It is authentically established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, in the narration of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawni, from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Two gardens of gold—whose vessels and everything in them are of gold—and two gardens of silver—whose vessels and everything in them are of silver. The only veil between the people and their looking at their Lord (Mighty and Majestic) is the mantle of kibriyāʾ (Majesty) over His Face in the Garden of ʿAdn.” ⦗1⦘
Al-Bayhaqī transmitted, through Muʾammal ibn Ismāʿīl, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Thābit, from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Mūsā, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Two gardens of gold are for the sābiqūn (the foremost), and two gardens of silver for the aṣḥāb al-yamīn (the people of the right).” ⦗2⦘
Al-Bukhārī said: Qutaybah narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us [from Ḥumayd], from Anas ibn Mālik: The mother of Ḥārithah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after Ḥārithah had been killed on the Day of Badr, struck by a stray arrow ⦗3⦘. She said, “O Messenger of Allah, you know how dear Ḥārithah was to my heart. If he is in Paradise I shall not weep for him, but if not you will see what I will do.” He replied, “Have you lost your senses? Is it a single garden? Nay, there are many gardens, and he is in the highest Firdaws.” He also said, “A morning ⦗4⦘ or an evening spent in the path of Allah is better than the whole world and all it contains, and the space of a bow-length of one of you, or the place where his foot would rest…”
