It is also mentioned in another ḥadith:
“The key to Paradise is lā ilāha illā Allah (there is no god but Allah).” (1)
Imam Aḥmad, Muslim, and the compilers of the Sunan relate—through the narration of ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir and others—from the Commander of the Believers ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs wuḍūʾ (ablution) and perfects his purification, then lifts his gaze toward the sky and says, ‘I testify that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I testify that Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger,’ the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever of them he wishes.” (2)
Imam Aḥmad also narrates: ʿAffān told us, Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal (3) told us, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq reported from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyān. On the Day of Resurrection it will be announced, ‘Where are those who used to fast?’ When they enter, it will be closed, and none but them shall enter through it.”
Bishr added, “I later met Abū Ḥāzim and asked him about this, and he narrated it to me; however, I remember more precisely the version transmitted by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.” (4)
Al-Ṭabarānī reports: Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān told us, Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam told us, Abū Ghassān told us, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“In Paradise there are eight gates; one of them is called al-Rayyān, and none shall enter it except those who fast.”
Al-Bukhārī also recorded it from Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam with this chain, and Muslim from Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, from Abū Ḥāzim Salamah ibn Dīnār, from Sahl, with the same wording. (5)
Imam Aḥmad likewise narrates: ʿAbd al-Razzaq told us, Maʿmar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever spends two kinds of wealth in the path of Allah will be called from the gates of Paradise. Paradise has eight gates: if he is among the people of prayer, he will be called from the Gate of Prayer; if among the people of fasting, he will be called from the Gate of al-Rayyān; if among the people of charity, he will be called from the Gate of Charity; and if among the people of jihad, he will be called from the Gate of Jihad.”
Abū Bakr then said, “O Messenger of Allah, is anyone required to enter by one specific gate? Is there anyone who will be called from all of them, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Yes, and I hope that you will be among them.”
The two Ṣaḥīḥs also record this report from al-Zuhrī with the same chain, and they further transmit, through Shaybān, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, a similar narration. (6)
