and enter Paradise.” He goes to it, but it seems to him to be already full, so he returns and says, “My Lord, I found it full.” Allah says, “Go and enter Paradise.” He approaches it again, yet it appears to him to be full, so he turns back and says, “My Lord, I found it full.” Allah says, “Go and enter Paradise, for you shall have the like of this world and ten times as much—indeed, the like of ten worlds.” The man exclaims, “Are You making fun of me, or laughing at me, while You are the King?” Abū Hurayrah said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laugh until his molar teeth became visible, and it used to be said: that man is the lowest-ranking inhabitant of Paradise. Al-Dāraqutnī, in his book Those Who Narrated from Mālik, and al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī, through an unusual chain, relate from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ḥakam: “Mālik narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The last person to enter Paradise will be a man from Juhaynah, called “Juhaynah.” The people of Paradise will say, “With Juhaynah is sure news; ask him whether anyone from creation still remains in the Fire.”’”
This ḥadith cannot be soundly attributed to Imām Mālik, for the transmitters who report it from him are unknown. Had it truly come from him, it would have been found in his well-known works—such as the Muwaṭṭaʾ and other collections transmitted on his authority by reliable narrators. It is astonishing that al-Qurṭubī cited it in al-Tadhkira and accepted it without reservation, stating: Ibn ʿUmar said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The last person to enter Paradise is a man from Juhaynah, called ‘Juhaynah.’ The people of Paradise will say, ‘With Juhaynah is sure news.’” (2)
Al-Suhaylī likewise mentioned it without declaring it weak, and he recorded another opinion that the man’s name is Hannād. Allah knows best.
Muslim said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us; my father narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from al-Maʿrūr ibn Suwayd, from Abū Dharr, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I certainly know the last of the people of Paradise to enter Paradise and the last of the people of the Fire to leave it: a man who will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said, ‘Show him his minor sins and withhold from him his major ones.’ His minor sins will be displayed and it will be said, ‘On such-and-such a day you committed this and that; on such-and-such a day you committed this and that.’ He will reply, ‘Yes,’ unable to deny it, all the while fearing that his major sins will also be shown. Then it will be said to him, ‘For every sin you shall have a good deed in its place.’ He will say, ‘My Lord, I have other deeds I do not see recorded here!’” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth were visible.
