Al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Manṣūr narrated to us; Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Būshanjī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Muqaddimī narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Abī Sārah narrated to us, from Thābit al-Bunnānī, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“On the Day of Resurrection a man from the people of Paradise will look out over the Fire, and a man from among the people of the Fire will call to him, saying, ‘O so-and-so, do you recognize me?’ He will answer, ‘By Allah, I do not recognize you. Who are you?’ The man will reply, ‘I am the one whom you passed by in the world when you asked me for a drink of water and I gave it to you.’ He will say, ‘Now I remember.’ The man will then say, ‘So intercede for me with your Lord on account of that.’
“He will then ask Allah—Exalted is He—saying, ‘My Lord, as I was looking over the Fire, a man from its dwellers called to me and asked, “Do you recognize me?” I replied, “By Allah, I do not recognize you. Who are you?” He said, “I am the one you passed by in the world and you asked me for a drink of water, and I gave it to you. Intercede for me with your Lord.” So allow me to intercede for him.’ Allah will accept his intercession and will command that the man be brought out of the Fire.” (1)
Abū Ṭālib Ṭāhir al-Faqīh informed us; Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Ṣaffār al-Iṣbahānī informed us; Abū Qabīṣah Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmārah ibn al-Qaʿqāʿ al-Ḍabbī al-Iṣbahānī al-Baghdādī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿImrān al-Akhnasī narrated to us; I heard Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh [the neighbour of Ibn Hārūn narrating], from Sulaymān al-Taymī (2), from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah will gather the people of Paradise in rows, and He will gather the people of the Fire in rows. A man from the rows of the Fire will look at a man standing in the rows of the people of Paradise and will say, ‘O so-and-so, do you remember the favour I once did you in the world?’ He will say, ‘My Lord, this man rendered me a kindness in the world.’ It will then be said, ‘Take him by the hand and admit him into Paradise.’”
Anas said: “I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say this.”
He added: “Al-Samʿānī likewise transmitted it from Aḥmad ibn ʿImrān, and Allah knows best.” (3)
[This ḥadīth shows that a person’s deeds intercede on his behalf with Allah on the Day of Resurrection.]
ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubārak said: Rishdīn ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Ḥuyayy, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥublī, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, who said:
“Fasting and the Qur'an will certainly intercede for the servant.”
He continued: “Fasting will say, ‘My Lord, I kept him from food, drink, and passions during the day; so permit me to intercede [for him].’ And the Qur'an will say, ‘I kept him from sleep at night; so permit me to intercede for him.’” (4)
