and they will enter Paradise by virtue of his intercession; a man will intercede for an entire tribe and they will enter Paradise through his intercession, and a man from among them will intercede for another man and his household, and they too will enter Paradise through his intercession. (1)
Al-Bazzar transmitted, with his chain, from Anas ibn Malik—attributed to the Prophet ﷺ:
“Indeed, a man will intercede for two men, even for three.” (2)
He likewise reports—on the authority of Sufyan al-Thawri, from Adam ibn ʿAli, from Ibn ʿUmar—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“It will be said to a man on that day, ‘Rise, O so-and-so, and intercede.’ He will then rise and intercede for a tribe, for a household, for a man, or for two men, in proportion to his deeds.” (3)
Al-Husayn ibn Waqid narrated—from Abu Ghalib—that Abu Umamah told him: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“By the intercession of a man from my community more people will enter Paradise than the number of Mudar; a man will intercede for the people of his own household, and he will intercede according to the measure of his deeds.” (4)
Al-Bayhaqi related—from al-Hakim, from al-Aṣamm, from al-Hasan ibn Mukram, from Yazid ibn Harun—that Ḥariz (5) informed us, from ʿAbd al-Rahman (or ʿAbd Allah) ibn Maysarah, from Abu Umamah:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “By the intercession of a man from my community who is not a prophet, as many people will certainly enter Paradise as the two tribes—or as one of the two tribes—Rabiʿah and Mudar.” A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is not Rabiʿah part of Mudar (6)?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “I only repeat what I have been made to say.” (7)
Imam Ahmad said: Ismaʿil ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Khalid al-Ḥadhdhaʾ narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shaqiq, who said:
I was sitting with a group—being the fourth among them—in Iliyaʾ (Jerusalem) when one of them said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “By the intercession of a man from my community more people will enter Paradise than the Banu Tamim.” We asked, “Other than you, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Other than me.” I asked, “Did you yourself hear this?” He said, “Yes.” When he rose, I asked, “Who is that man?” They replied, “Ibn Abi al-Jadʿaʾ.” (8)
Ahmad then transmitted the report through Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, and through ʿAffan, from Wuhaib—both from Khalid al-Ḥadhdhaʾ—with similar wording. (9)
