and I assisted you,’
Another will say, ‘O so-and-so, do you not remember the day I gave you—’ (he said: I think he said, ‘such-and-such’)—and the believer will recall [and recognize] him; he will then appeal to his Lord on his behalf, and He will allow him to intercede for him. Its chain of transmission contains some weakness (1).
(Another chain from Anas)
Ibn Mājah said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; they said: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Yazīd al-Raqāshī, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘People will be lined up on the Day of Resurrection in rows.’ Ibn Numayr added: ‘The people of Paradise and the people of the Fire.’ A man from the people of the Fire will pass by a man from the people of Paradise and say, ‘O so-and-so, do you not remember the day I handed you ṭahūr (water for purification)?’—and he will intercede [for him].
Another will pass by a man and say, ‘Do you not remember the day you asked me for water and I gave you a drink?’—and he will intercede for him.
Yet another will pass by a man and say, ‘O so-and-so, do you not remember the day you sent me on such-and-such an errand and I carried it out for you?’—and he will intercede for him.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī narrated it with a wording conveying the same meaning (2).
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mūsā told me; Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thābit, from al-Ḥasan, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘On the Day of Resurrection a man from the people of Paradise will say, “My Lord, so-and-so gave me a drink of water in the world; allow me to intercede for him.” Allah will say, “Go and bring him out of the Fire.” So he will go and feel around in the Fire until he brings him out.’ This is one of the fair mursal reports of al-Ḥasan.
[Among the narrations that mention the believers’ intercession for their relatives]
Some have quoted from the Psalms of David (upon him be peace) that it contains these words:
God says, ‘My ascetic servants, I shall say to them on the Day of Resurrection: I did not withhold the world from you because you were insignificant to Me, nor because the world is dear to Me; rather, I wished thereby that you should receive today your full and abundant portion from Me, untouched by the world and unruffled by its passions. Move among the ranks; anyone whom you loved in the world, or who fulfilled a need for you, or shielded you from backbiting, or clothed you with even a rag, or fed you a morsel, or gave you a drink—seeking My Face and desiring My pleasure—take him by the hand and admit him into Paradise.’
Al-Tirmidhī and al-Bayhaqī also transmitted, through the chain of Mālik ibn Mighwal, from ʿAṭiyya, from Abū Saʿīd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Among my community are men whose intercession will encompass great multitudes of people, and they will enter Paradise by virtue of his intercession,’
