Ahmad said: Ismaʿil narrated to us, Saʿid b. Yazid narrated to us, from Abu Naḍrah, from Abu Saʿid, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “As for the people of the Fire who truly belong to it, they will neither die therein nor live. But there is another group”—or words to that effect—“whom the Fire will strike because of their sins,” or he said, “because of their misdeeds. Allah will then cause them to die a death; when they have become charcoal, permission for intercession will be granted. They will be brought out in bundles, bundle after bundle, and scattered upon the rivers of Paradise. It will be announced, ‘O people of Paradise, pour water over them,’ and they will sprout like a grain that grows in the silt carried by a flood.”
A man in the gathering said, “It is as though the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had lived in the desert.” This chain is sound according to the criteria of the Ṣaḥīḥayn ⦗2⦘, though they did not record it through this route. ⦗3⦘

Ahmad said: Yaḥyā b. Saʿid narrated to us, ʿUthmān b. Ghiyāth narrated to us, he told me Abu Naḍrah, from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, who said:
People will be presented upon the bridge over Jahannam; upon it are spikes, hooks, and barbs that snatch people away. Some will pass like lightning, others like the wind, others like a galloping horse, others will run, [others will walk, and others will crawl], while still others will inch along on their bellies. As for the inhabitants of the Fire, they will neither die nor live; but another group will be seized because of their sins and burned until they become charcoal. Then Allah will grant permission for intercession; they will be gathered in heaps, heap after heap, and flung upon a river, where they will grow just as a grain grows in the silt carried by a flood.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Have you ever seen the ṣabghāʾ ⦗4⦘?” Over the Fire there are three trees. A man will be brought out—or will emerge—from the Fire and come to stand on its edge. He will say, “My Lord, turn my face away from it.” Allah, Exalted is He, will say, “Do you pledge and promise not to ask Me for anything else?” The man will see a tree and say, “My Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may rest in its shade and eat of its fruit.” Allah will say, “Do you pledge and promise not to ask Me for anything else?” Then he will see another tree, more beautiful than the first, and will say, “My Lord, move me near this tree so that I may rest in its shade and eat of its fruit.” Allah will say, “Do you pledge and promise not to ask Me for anything else?” Then he will see a third tree and will say, “My Lord,”
