of faith, then bring him out.’
He said: They will bring out some people and will intercede again. Then it will be said, ‘Go—proceed—and whoever you find in whose heart is the weight of a mustard seed of faith, bring him out.’ He said: They will bring out some people, after which Allah, Exalted is He, will say, ‘Now I Myself shall bring out—through My knowledge and My mercy.’ He will then bring out numbers many times greater than those they brought out, and it will be written across their necks: ‘Freed by Allah—may He be exalted.’ They will enter Paradise, and inside it they will be called al-Jahannamiyyīn (the former inmates of Hell). Aḥmad alone transmitted this. (1)

Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us, al-Qāsim ibn al-Faḍl al-Ḥuddānī (2) narrated to us, Saʿīd ibn al-Muhallab narrated to me. He said: Ṭalq ibn Ḥabīb said, “I used to be one of the people who most strongly denied intercession, until I met Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah. I recited to him every verse I could find on intercession and every verse that mentions the everlasting stay of the people of the Fire. He said to me, ‘O Ṭalq (3), do you suppose that you read the Book of Allah and know the Sunnah of His Prophet better than I do?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘What you have recited concerns the idolaters, whereas these are people who committed sins, were punished for them, and were then brought out of the Fire.’ He then pointed with both hands to his ears and said, ‘May they be deaf if I did not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that while we were reciting what you have just recited.’ (4)
[The ḥadīth of ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit—may Allah be pleased with him]
Aḥmad said: al-Ḥakam ibn Nāfiʿ (5) narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Rāshid ibn Dāwūd al-Ṣanʿānī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥassān, from Rawḥ ibn Zinbāʿ, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, who said:
One night the Prophet ﷺ was missing from among his Companions. Whenever they halted, they would place him at their centre, so they were alarmed and feared that Allah, Exalted is He, had chosen for him companions other than themselves. Suddenly they saw the figure of the Prophet ﷺ, and when they recognised him they proclaimed ‘Allāhu akbar!’ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we feared that Allah had chosen companions for you other than us.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘No. You are my Companions in this world and the Hereafter. Indeed, Allah, Exalted is He, awakened me and said: “O Muḥammad, I have not sent a prophet or a messenger except that he asked of Me a request which I granted him. So ask, O Muḥammad, and you shall be granted.” I said, “My request is intercession for my community on the Day of Resurrection.”’
Abū Bakr said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is intercession?’ He replied, ‘I will say, “My Lord, my intercession which I kept in reserve with You,” and He will say…’
