three intercessions, and at the end of the last of them he said:

“I will then say: ‘My community,’ and it will be said [to me]: ‘You have on your behalf whoever said lā ilāha illā Allāh (there is no deity but Allah) with sincerity.’ (1)

al-Bazzār said: ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Masʿadah narrated to us, from ʿImrān al-ʿAmmī (2), from al-Ḥasan, from Anas, who said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I will continue to intercede and my intercession will be accepted”—or he said—“and my Lord will cause me to intercede—Exalted is He—until I say, ‘My Lord, allow me to intercede for those who have said lā ilāha illā Allāh.’ It will be said, ‘O Muḥammad, this is not for you or for anyone else; it is Mine. By My might and My mercy, I will not leave in the Fire anyone who says lā ilāha illā Allāh.’”

He then declared, “We know of this ḥadith only through this chain.” Ibn Abī al-Dunyā likewise transmitted it from Abū Ḥafṣ al-Ṣayrafī, from Ḥammād ibn Masʿadah, with this same chain. (3)

Aḥmad said: Yūnus ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Ḥarb ibn Maymūn, Abū al-Khaṭṭāb al-Anṣārī, narrated to us from al-Naḍr ibn Anas, from Anas, who said:

The Prophet of Allah ﷺ told us, “I will be standing, waiting for my community to cross the ṣirāṭ, when Jesus comes to me and says, ‘These prophets have now come to you, O Muḥammad, asking you’—or he said—‘they have gathered around you, appealing to Allah—Exalted is He—to disperse all the nations to wherever Allah wills [because of the anguish they are in]. All creatures will be bridled by their sweat; for the believer it will be like a mild cold, whereas the unbeliever will be overtaken as though by death.’

“I will say, ‘O Jesus, wait until I return to you.’ Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ went and stood beneath the Throne and experienced what no chosen, near-stationed angel nor any deputed prophet had ever experienced. (4) Allah revealed to Gabriel: ‘Go to Muḥammad and say: Raise your head, ask and you will be granted, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.’

“So I interceded for my community that from every 99 people one would be taken out [of the Fire]. I kept going back and forth to my Lord—Exalted is He—and every time I stood in that place my intercession was granted, until Allah—Exalted is He—granted me this: He said, ‘O Muḥammad, admit from your community, from among the creation of Allah—Exalted is He—anyone who bore witness even for a single day that lā ilāha illā Allāh with sincerity and then died upon that.’” Aḥmad transmitted this alone, and al-Tirmidhī graded this chain ḥasan. (4) In reading (A): “fayulqin mā lam yulqin” (“he imparts what he has not been taught”). (5) It was recorded by Aḥmad in his Musnad (3/178) as a hadith hasan (good); al-Tirmidhī graded this isnad as hasan in his narration of another hadith (no. 2433).
