Saʿīd, from Qatādah, from Anas, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
“The believers will assemble on the Day of Resurrection and will become troubled about what is happening to them—or, he said, they will be inspired to do so….”
This report is identical to that of Abū ʿAwana, and within it he added:
“Then I will come to Him a fourth time—or I shall return the fourth time—and I will say: ‘My Lord, none remains except those whom the Qur’an has confined.’” (1)

Aḥmad said:
ʿAffān narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us; Qatādah narrated to us, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The believers will be held up on the Day of Resurrection and will grow anxious, and they will say, ‘If only we could seek intercession with our Lord so that He would relieve us of this place of ours!’
“They will come to Adam and say, ‘You are our father; Allah created you with His own Hand, caused His angels to prostrate before you, and taught you the names of all things. Intercede for us with your Lord.’
“He will reply, ‘I am not fit for that,’ and he will mention the sin he committed—his eating from the tree after being forbidden to do so—then he will say, ‘Go instead to Noah, the first prophet whom Allah sent to the people of the earth.’
“They will then come to Noah, who will say, ‘I am not fit for that,’ and he will recall his sin—asking his Lord about something of which he had no knowledge—then he will say, ‘Go to Abraham, the Close Friend of the All-Merciful.’
“They will come to Abraham, who will say, ‘I am not fit for that,’ and he will recall the sin he committed—three statements he uttered that were untrue: his saying, ‘Indeed, I am ill’; his saying, ‘Rather, the biggest of them did it’; and when he passed by a pompous tyrant while accompanied by his wife and said, ‘Tell him I am your brother, for I will tell him that you are my sister.’ Then he will say, ‘Go to Moses, a servant whom Allah spoke to directly and to whom He gave the Torah.’
“They will come to Moses, who will say, ‘I am not fit for that,’ and he will recall the sin he committed—his killing of a man—then he will say, ‘Go to Jesus, the servant of Allah and His Messenger, His Word, and a spirit from Him.’
“They will come to Jesus, who will say, ‘I am not fit for that, but go to Muhammad, a servant whose earlier and later sins have been forgiven.’
“They will then come to me, and I will seek permission to enter upon my Lord—Exalted is He—in His abode, and permission will be granted. When I see Him, I will fall down in prostration, and He will leave me in that state as long as He wills. Then He will say, ‘Raise your head, O Muhammad; speak and you will be heard, intercede and your intercession will be accepted, ask and you will be given.’ I shall praise my Lord—Exalted is He—with words of commendation and glorification that He will teach me; then I will intercede, and He will set for me a limit. I will bring them out and admit them into Paradise.”
I heard him say, “I will bring them out of the Fire and admit them into Paradise.”
He continued: “Then I will seek permission to enter upon my Lord—Exalted is He—a second time, and permission will be granted. When I see Him, I will fall down in prostration, and He will leave me in that state as long as He wills. Then He will say, ‘Raise your head, O Muhammad; speak and you will be heard, intercede and your intercession will be accepted, ask and you will be given.’ I will raise my head, praise my Lord with words of commendation and glorification that He will teach me, then I will intercede. He will set for me a limit, and I will bring them out and admit them into Paradise.”
Hammām said: I heard him say, “I will bring them out of the Fire and admit them into Paradise.”
He added: “Then I will seek permission to enter upon my Lord—Exalted is He—a third time. When I see Him, I will fall down in prostration, and He will leave me as long as He wills. Then He will say, ‘Raise, Muhammad…’”
