I will surely gladden your eye with regard to your community. Then the angels will stand before Allah, Mighty and Majestic, awaiting whatever command they will be given. The Lord—exalted and sanctified—will say to them:
“O company of wardens, lead those of Muhammad’s nation who persisted in the major sins to the Fire. My wrath against them has grown intense because of the way they treated My command with levity in the worldly abode, their disdain for My due, and their violation of My sanctity. They concealed themselves from people yet openly defied Me with sins, even though I had honored them and preferred them to every other nation, but they failed to recognize My favor and the magnitude of My blessing.”
At that, the wardens seize the men by their beards and the women by their forelocks and march them toward Hell. No servant of any other community is driven to the Fire except that his face is blackened, fetters (1) are fastened to his feet, and shackles placed around his neck—whereas the people of the Fire from this community are herded there in the very colors they used to bear. When they are brought before Mālik, he will say to them, “O miserable ones, from which nation are you? No group that has ever arrived here had faces handsomer than yours.”
They will answer, “O Mālik, we are from the nation of the Quran.”
He will reply, “O wretched folk, was it not the Quran that was sent down to Muhammad ﷺ?”
Thereupon they will lift their voices in sobbing and weeping: “Alas, Muhammad! O Muhammad, intercede for those of your followers who believed in you yet have been commanded to the Fire.” Mālik will then be summoned with threats and rebuke:
“O Mālik, who ordered you to reproach the wretched, converse with them, and delay their punishment? O Mālik, do not blacken their faces, for those faces once prostrated to Me in the world. O Mālik, do not shackle their necks, for they used to bathe from major ritual impurity. O Mālik, do not bind them with fetters, for they walked in circumambulation around My Sacred House. O Mālik, do not clothe them in molten pitch, for they once cast off their clothes for the state of ihram. O Mālik, [command the Fire not to burn their tongues, for they used to recite the Quran. O Mālik,] tell the Fire to seize them only according to the measure of their deeds. The Fire knows them, and the degree of punishment they merit, better than a mother knows her child.”
So among them are those whom the Fire will reach up to the ankles, among them those it will reach up to the knees, among them those it will reach up to the navel, and among them those it will reach up to the chest. When Allah has exacted retribution from them in proportion to their major sins, their arrogance, and their obstinacy, He will open a gate between them and the idol-worshipers while they are in the uppermost level of Hell, where they taste neither coolness nor drink. They will weep and say, “O Muhammad, have mercy on the wretched of your nation and intercede for them; the Fire has consumed their flesh, their bones, and their blood.”
Then they will cry out, “O our Lord, O our Master, have mercy on those who never associated anything with You in the worldly life, even though they sinned, erred, and transgressed.” At that the idol-worshipers will say to them, “Of what benefit was your faith in Allah and Muhammad?” Allah will be angered by this and will say, “O Jibril, go and bring out from the Fire whoever you find there from Muhammad’s community.”
He will bring them out in clusters (2), scorched (3), and place them by a river at the gate of Paradise called the River of Life. They will remain there until they return more radiant than they ever were. Then Allah—Mighty and Majestic—will command that they enter Paradise, with the words written across their foreheads: “These are the people of Hell who have been freed.”
