Mention of a river in it that, in relation to Hell, is like the River of al-Qalūṭ (1) among the rivers of this world. It is the receptacle of filth, refuse, and stench—may Allah protect us from it.
Imam Aḥmad said: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us. He said: I read to al-Fuḍayl ibn Maysarah, concerning the ḥadīth of Abū Ḥarīz (2), that Abū Burdah related it to him, from the ḥadīth of Abū Mūsā, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Three types of people will never enter Paradise: the habitual wine-drinker, the one who severs kinship ties, and the one who affirms sorcery. Whoever dies while addicted to wine, Allah will make him drink from the River of al-Ghūṭah.”
It was asked, “And what is the River of al-Ghūṭah?”
He replied, “A river that flows from the private parts of the mūmisāt (prostitutes); the foul odor of their private parts torments the inhabitants of the Fire.” (3)
Mention of a valley—or a well—therein that is called: Habhab
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Abū Khaythamah narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; al-Azhar ibn Sinān narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Wāsiʿ narrated to us. He said:
I entered upon Bilāl ibn Abī Burdah and said to him, “O Bilāl, your father related to me, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: ‘In Jahannam there is a valley called Habhab; it is a certainty upon Allah to lodge in it every shrieking, stubborn person. Beware, O Bilāl, lest you be among those who dwell in it.’”
Al-Ṭabarānī also transmitted it in a report from Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān, from Azhar ibn Sinān, from Muḥammad ibn Wāsiʿ: that he entered upon Bilāl ibn Abī Burdah ibn Abī Mūsā and said to him, “Your father related to me from your grandfather, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘In Jahannam there is a valley, and within the valley a well called Habhab; it is incumbent upon Allah to house in it every arrogant, obstinate tyrant.’”
Azhar ibn Sinān is the sole reporter of this narration, and some of the ḥadīth critics have spoken about him and judged him lenient (4).
[Mention of Wayl and Saʿūd]
Allah the Exalted says: “Woe on that Day to those who deny the truth.” (al-Mursalāt 77:15)
And He says: “I shall bind him to a steep ascent.” (al-Muddaththir 74:17)
