[The Pit of Sorrow]
ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿAmmār ibn Sayf narrated to us; from Abū Muʿādh, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Seek refuge with Allah from the Pit of Sorrow (jubb al-ḥazan).” They asked, “What is the Pit of Sorrow?” He replied, “A valley in Jahannam from which Jahannam itself seeks protection four hundred times every day. Allah has prepared it for the reciters who show off with their deeds; and among the most detested of reciters to Allah are those who support oppressive rulers.”
Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah also narrated it through the chain of ʿAmmār ibn Sayf, from Abū Muʿān—the correct form of the name. Al-Tirmidhī abridged it, declared it gharīb, and in his wording it reads “one hundred times.” Ibn Mājah gave the full version, and in his narration it says, “who visit the oppressive rulers.” ⦗2⦘
[The Pit of al-Falaq]
Hushaym related from al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab ⦗3⦘, from ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Khawlānī, who said: A man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ came to us in Damascus. Observing how the people were engrossed in the world, its desires, and its adornments, he said, “What benefit will all of that bring them? Is not al-Falaq awaiting them?” He was asked, “What is al-Falaq?” He replied, “A pit in the Fire; when it is opened, the inhabitants of the Fire howl in terror from it.” He said “howl from it,” not “flee from it. ” Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it in the biography of that Companion of the Prophet ﷺ.
[The Valley of Lamlama]
Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān said: Ḥibbān ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn ʿUbayd Allah ⦗4⦘ narrated to us: I heard my father say, “I heard Abū Hurayrah say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘In Jahannam there is a valley called Lamlama; indeed, the valleys of Jahannam seek refuge in Allah from its heat.’” This is a gharīb ḥadīth.
