from Abū Hurayrah (1) as a marfūʿ report. Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah likewise transmitted it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Asīd al-Akhnasī (2), from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Abū Ṣāliḥ as his own statement.
Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“Indeed We have in store for them fetters and a blazing Fire, (12)
food that sticks in the throat, and a painful torment.”
(Q 73:12–13)
He, Most High, also says:
“When the shackles will be on their necks and the chains; they will be dragged (71)
into the scalding water, then hurled into the Fire.”
(Q 40:71–72)
And He says:
“On the Day they are dragged in the Fire on their faces: ‘Taste the touch of Saqar. (48)
Surely We created everything according to a precise measure, (49)
and Our command is but one word, like the blink of an eye.’”
(Q 54:48–50)
And He says:
“Above them are canopies of Fire and beneath them are canopies. With this Allah warns His servants: ‘My servants, therefore, be mindful of Me.’”
(Q 39:16)
He also says:
“For them Hell will be a bed and over them coverings (of Fire); thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.”
(Q 7:41)
And He says:
“These two adversaries have disputed about their Lord: as for those who disbelieve, garments of Fire will be cut for them; scalding water will be poured over their heads, (19)
melting whatever is in their bellies and their skins. (20)
And for them are maces of iron.”
(Q 22:19–21)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā said:
Zuhayr narrated to us; Ḥasan narrated to us; from Ibn Luhayʿah; he said, Darrāj narrated to us, from Abū al-Haytham, from Abū Saʿīd, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:
“The surādiq (enclosure) of the people of the Fire has four massive walls; each wall is as thick as a journey of forty years.”
Al-Tirmidhī recorded it as well, from Suwayd, from Ibn al-Mubārak, from Rishdīn ibn Saʿd, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, from Darrāj, with a wording to the same effect (3).
Aḥmad said:
Ḥasan narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us; Darrāj narrated to us, from Abū al-Haytham, from Abū Saʿīd, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:
“If a single mace of iron from Jahannam were placed upon the earth, and mankind and jinn together tried to lift it, they would not be able to move it (4) even a little from the ground.” (5)
Ibn Wahb said:
—from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, from Darrāj Abū al-Samḥ (6), from Abū al-Haytham, from Abū Saʿīd— that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If a mountain were struck with an iron mace from Jahannam, it would crumble until it turned into dust.” (7)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr ibn Mardūyah also related in his Tafsīr, through Bashīr (8) ibn Ṭalḥah, from Khālid ibn Durayk, from Yaʿlā ibn Munyah, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah will raise up for the people of the Fire a dark cloud; when it looms…”
