Allah the Exalted says:
“Surely Hell is the appointed place for them all – (43) it has seven gates; each gate has a portion allotted to it from among them.” (Qur’an 15:43–44).
Al-Bayhaqī said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; Bishr ibn Bakr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd narrated to me; Abū Saʿīd narrated to me; I heard Abū Hurayrah say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The ṣirāṭ (the bridge) spans the two sides of Hell; it is extremely slippery. While people are crossing it the prophets will be saying: ‘O Allah, grant safety, grant safety!’ People will pass over it as fast as a flash of lightning, as the blink of an eye, on the backs of the finest horses and mules, riding beasts, or running on foot. Some will come through safe and sound, others will be scratched yet released, and others will be hurled into it. Hell has seven gates; for every gate there is a fixed share of them.” (1)
Al-Bayhaqī also said: Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishrān informed us; Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad aṣ-Ṣaffār narrated to us; Saʿdān ibn Naṣr narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us, from al-Khalīl ibn Murrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not go to sleep until he had recited “Tabārak” (i.e., Sūrat al-Mulk) and “Ḥā Mīm as-Sajdah” (i.e., Sūrat Fuṣṣilat). He then said:
“The Ḥā Mīm sūrahs are seven, and the gates of Hell are seven: Jahannam, al-Ḥuṭamah, Laẓā, as-Saʿīr, Saqar, al-Hāwiyah, and al-Jaḥīm.”
He added: “Each Ḥā Mīm will come on the Day of Resurrection— I think he said it will stand at one of those gates— and will say: ‘O Allah, do not let anyone who believed in me and used to recite me enter through this gate.’”
Al-Bayhaqī commented: “This isnād is broken, and there is a question concerning al-Khalīl ibn Murrah.” (2)
Al-Tirmidhī related— from the narration of Mālik ibn Mighwal, from Junayd, from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him)— that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Hell has seven gates; one gate is for the one who unsheathes the sword against my ummah [or he said: ‘against the nation of Muhammad’].”
Tirmidhī said: “It is gharīb; we do not know it except through the report of Mālik ibn Mighwal.” (3)
Kaʿb (4) said: “Hell has seven gates; one of them is for the Ḥarūriyyah.” (5)
Wahb ibn Munabbih said: “Between every two gates of Hell lies a distance of seventy years’ travel, and each gate is seventy times fiercer than the one above it.”
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Khalaf ibn Hishām narrated to us; Abū Shihāb al-Ḥannāṭ (6) narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Qays al-Mulāʾī, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿĀṣim ibn Ḍumrah, from ʿAlī, who said:
“Indeed, the gates of Hell …”
