the earth before nightfall; and were it to be hurled from the very summit of the chain (1) it would travel for forty years—night and day—before it reached its root or its bottom.” Al-Tirmidhī also narrated it. (2)
Imām Aḥmad said: “Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Umayyah (3) narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥuyayy narrated to me; Ṣafwān ibn Yaʿlā narrated to me, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘The sea is Hell.’ (4)
A discussion of how great their bodies will be in the Fire [may Allah protect us from the Fire]
Allah the Exalted says: ‘Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our signs—we shall soon consign them to a Fire; whenever their skins are burned away We shall replace them with other skins, so that they may taste the punishment. Surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.’ (56) ⦗al-Nisāʾ 4:56⦘
Aḥmad said: “Wakīʿ narrated to us; Abū Yaḥyā al-Ṭawīl narrated to me; Abū Yaḥyā al-Qattāt narrated to me, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ who said: ‘The people of Hell will become enormous in the Fire—so much so that the distance from the lobe of one of them’s ear to his shoulder is a journey of seven hundred years, the thickness of his skin is seventy cubits, and his molar is like Mount Uḥud.’” Aḥmad recorded it in his Musnad from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and that is the sound version.
Al-Bayhaqī likewise transmitted it, and then related it through the route of ʿImrān ibn Zayd, from Abū Yaḥyā al-Qattāt, from Mujāhid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr as a marfūʿ report with the same wording; thereafter al-Bayhaqī declared the first version sound, as we have mentioned. Allah knows best. This ḥadīth is rare through this chain, though parts of it are corroborated by other narrations from Abū Hurayrah—and Allah knows best. (5)
Imām Aḥmad also said: “Ribʿī ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd narrated to me, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The molar tooth of the disbeliever on the Day of Resurrection will be like Mount Uḥud, the breadth of his skin is seventy cubits, his thigh is like Wariqān (6), and his seat in the Fire is like the distance between me and al-Zabadah.’” Al-Bayhaqī transmitted it through the route of Bishr ibn al-Mu faḍḍal, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq, adding: “and his upper arm is like al-Bayḍāʾ (7).” (8)
