Muʿāwiyah, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAlqamah ibn Qays: I heard Ibn Masʿūd say about Allah’s words, “Indeed it hurls forth sparks like palaces” (al-Mursalāt 77:32): “They are not like trees and mountains; rather, they are like cities and fortresses.” (1)
Al-Ṭabarānī said: Ṭālib ibn Qurrah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā ibn al-Ṭabbāʿ narrated to us; Mubashshir (2) ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Tammām ibn Najīḥ, from al-Ḥasan, from Anas: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If a single spark from the sparks of Hell were in the East, those in the West would feel its heat.” (3)
Aḥmad said: Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“The Fire complained to its Lord, saying, ‘Some parts of me have consumed other parts.’ So He allowed it two breaths: one in winter and one in summer. Thus the most intense heat you experience and the severest cold you experience are from the exhalations of Hell.”
With this same chain the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When the heat is fierce, postpone the prayer until it cools, for the severity of heat comes from the exhalation of Hell.” (4)
Aḥmad said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, who informed me on the authority of Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ:
“The Fire complained to its Lord, saying, ‘My Lord, some parts of me have consumed other parts—relieve me!’ He therefore allows it, every year, two breaths: the coldest cold you feel comes from the frost (zamharīr) of Hell, and the hottest heat you feel comes from the heat of Hell.” Al-Bukhārī and Muslim also transmitted it through al-Zuhrī. (5)
Aḥmad said: Yazīd narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thābit al-Bunānī, from Anas ibn Mālik: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The most pampered person in the world from among the people of the Fire will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and dipped once into the Fire. He will then be asked, ‘Son of Adam, did you ever see any good? Did any luxury ever come your way?’ He will reply, ‘No, by Allah, my Lord.’ Then the person who suffered the greatest hardship in the world from among the people of Paradise will be brought and dipped once into Paradise. He will be asked, ‘Son of Adam, did you ever see misery? Did any hardship ever befall you?’ He will say, ‘No, by Allah, my Lord—no misery ever came to me, nor did I ever see hardship.’” (6)
Aḥmad said: Rawḥ narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated to us, from Qatādah; Anas ibn Mālik narrated to us that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said:
“A disbeliever will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to him, ‘Suppose you possessed the whole earth filled with gold—would you offer it as a ransom for yourself?’ He will reply, ‘Yes.’ He will be told, ‘You were asked for something far easier than that.’ That is—Exalted is He—His saying: ‘Indeed those who…’”
