Al-Bukhārī said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ narrated to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr:
I heard the Prophet ﷺ say:
“Indeed, the most lightly punished inhabitant of the Fire on the Day of Resurrection is a man beneath whose arches of the feet two live embers are placed, so that his brain boils from them just as a cauldron—or a kettle—boils.” (1)
Muslim said: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; ʿAffān narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us; Thābit informed us, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Ibn ʿAbbās: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The inhabitant of the Fire who endures the mildest torment is Abū Ṭālib; he will be wearing two sandals from which his brain will boil.” (2)
Aḥmad said: Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAjlān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ:
“Indeed, the one who suffers the lightest punishment among the people of the Fire will be wearing two sandals from which his brain will boil.” (3)
With this same chain it is also related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” (4)
Aḥmad likewise said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us; Zāʾidah informed us, from al-Mukhtār ibn Fulful, from Anas: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“By Him in whose hand is Muḥammad’s soul, were you to see what I have seen, you would weep much and laugh little.”
They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what have you seen?” He replied, “I have seen Paradise and Hell.” Aḥmad also transmitted it through Shuʿbah, from Mūsā ibn Anas, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” (5)
Aḥmad further said: Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; Ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from ʿUmārah ibn Ghaziyyah (6) al-Anṣārī—who said that he heard Ḥumayd ibn ʿUbayd, the client of Banū al-Muʿallā, say: I heard Thābit al-Bunānī relate, on the authority of Anas ibn Mālik, that the Prophet ﷺ said to Gabriel:
“How is it that I have never seen Michael laugh?”
He replied, “Michael has not laughed since the Fire was created.” (7)
Allah the Exalted says:
“Proceed to that which you used to deny! (29)
Proceed to a shadow of three branches, (30)
A shade that is neither cooling nor of any use against the flame. (31)
Indeed it throws up sparks like palaces, (32)
As though they were yellow camels. (33)
Woe on that Day to the deniers!” (al-Mursalāt 29-34).
Al-Ṭabarānī said: Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ḥulwānī narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from Ḥudayj (8) ibn
