that is kindled—whether they or others kindle it—is but one of seventy parts of the Fire of Jahannam. (1)
[Another route with a different wording]
Ahmad said: Qutaybah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAziz narrated to us, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “This fire is one part out of one hundred parts of Jahannam.” This chain fulfils the conditions laid down by Muslim, although its phrasing is unusual. (2)
Most of the reports from Abu Hurayrah, however, say “one of seventy parts,” and the hadith has likewise come through others, by way of ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud.
Al-Bazzar said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahim narrated to us; ʿUbayd ibn Ishaq al-ʿAttar narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from ʿAmr ibn Maymun, from ʿAbd Allah [ibn Masʿud], who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “A righteous dream is good news; it is one of seventy parts of prophethood. And this fire of yours is one of seventy parts of the scorching blast of Jahannam. So long as a servant is waiting for the prayer, he is considered to be in prayer unless he invalidates his wudu (ablution).” Al-Bazzar added: It has also been related as a companion-only (mawquf) report. (3)
It has likewise come through Abu Saʿid, as al-Bazzar also stated: Muhammad ibn al-Layth narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us; Shayban narrated to us, from Firas (4), from ʿAtiyyah, from Abu Saʿid, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “This fire of yours is one of seventy parts of the Fire of Jahannam; each part possesses its own heat.” (5)
Al-Tabarani said: Ahmad ibn ʿAmr al-Khallal narrated to us; Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir al-Hizami narrated to us; Maʿn ibn ʿIsa al-Qazzaz narrated to us, from Malik [ibn Anas], from his uncle Abu Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “Do you know how your fire compares to the Fire of Jahannam? It is blacker than the smoke of your fire by seventy-fold.” Al-Hafiz al-Diyaʾ commented: Abu Musʿab also transmitted it from Malik, raising it to the Prophet, and in my judgement its chain meets the criteria of authenticity. Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah both related—from ʿAbbas al-Duri, from Yahya ibn Abi Bukayr, from
