on a storm-laden day, and they did just that.
Allah then reassembled him and said, “What made you do this?”
He replied, “Fear of You.” So Allah received him with His mercy.
It is also recorded elsewhere, and Muslim transmits it through several chains from Qatādah (1). Al-Bukhārī and Muslim likewise relate it, with similar wording, through Rabīʿī ibn Ḥirāsh from Ḥudhayfah, from the Prophet ﷺ (2). [And it is reported through al-Zuhrī from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from Abū Hurayrah from the Prophet ﷺ in the same sense] (3).
Another ḥadīth:
Al-Bukhārī said (4): ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd narrated to us; from Ibn Shihāb; from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah; from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (5) said:
“There was a man who used to lend money to the people. He would say to his servant, ‘When you encounter someone in hardship, waive the debt—perhaps Allah will pardon us.’ He then met Allah, and Allah pardoned him.”
Al-Bukhārī records it in other sections as well (7), and Muslim relates it through al-Zuhrī (8).
Another ḥadīth:
Al-Bukhārī said (9): ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Mālik narrated to me; from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, [and from Abū al-Naḍr, the freedman of ʿUmar ibn ʿUbayd Allāh; from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, from his father, who said that he heard him ask Usāmah ibn Zayd, “What have you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the plague?” Usāmah replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The plague is a scourge sent upon a group from the Children of Israel and upon] those before you. If you hear of it in a land, do not enter it; and if it breaks out in a land while you are there, do not leave it fleeing from it.’” (10)
Abū al-Naḍr added, “Let nothing take you out except fleeing from it.”
