and he did not urge the feeding of the needy; [34] so today he has no devoted friend here, [35] nor any food except festering pus— [36] none shall eat it but the persistent sinners. [37] (Qur’an 69:25–37)
And He, exalted, says:
“The evildoer will wish he could ransom himself from the torment of that Day with his own children, [11] his wife and his brother, [12] his clan that sheltered him, [13] and everyone on earth besides—then save himself. [14] No indeed! It is a fiercely blazing fire, [15] stripping off the scalp, [16] calling to those who turned their backs and walked away, [17] and to those who amassed wealth and hoarded it.” [18] (Qur’an 70:11–18)
And He says:
“Surely with Us are shackles and a raging Fire, [12] and food that chokes, and a painful punishment, [13] on the Day the earth and the mountains quake, and the mountains become a shifting mound of sand.” [14] (Qur’an 73:12–14)
And He says:
“I shall cast him into Saqar. [26] And what will make you understand what Saqar is? [27] It spares nothing and leaves nothing, [28] scorching the skin of human beings. [29] Over it are nineteen. [30] We have appointed only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number but a trial for those who disbelieve—so that the People of the Scripture may be certain, the believers may grow in faith, the People of the Scripture and the believers may entertain no doubt, and those with sickness in their hearts and the disbelievers may say, ‘What did Allah intend by this analogy?’ Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills; and none knows your Lord’s hosts but He.” [31] (Qur’an 74:26–31)
And He says:
“Every soul is held in pledge for what it has earned, [38] except the people of the right, [39] who in Gardens will inquire [40] about the criminals: [41] ‘What drove you into Saqar?’ [42] They will say, ‘We were not among those who prayed, [43] nor did we feed the poor; [44] we used to plunge along with those who plunged, [45] and we used to deny the Day of Recompense [46] until certainty came upon us.’ [47] The intercession of any intercessors will then be of no benefit to them.” [48] (Qur’an 74:38–48)
And He says:
“Indeed We have prepared for the disbelievers chains, shackles, and a blazing Fire.” [4] (Qur’an 76:4)
And He says:
“Proceed to that which you used to deny! [29] Proceed to a shadow of three columns, [30] providing no cool shade and protecting from none of the flames. [31] It hurls sparks as huge as palaces, [32] as though they were yellow camels. [33] Woe on that Day to those who denied!” [34] (Qur’an 77:29–34)
And He says:
“Surely Hell lies in wait, [21] a home for the transgressors. [22] There they will remain for ages, [23] tasting there neither coolness nor drink, [24] save boiling water and putrid discharge, [25] a fitting recompense. [26] Indeed, they did not expect an account, [27] and they flat-out denied Our signs. [28] Yet We have enumerated all things in a book. [29] So taste; We shall add nothing for you but torment.” [30] (Qur’an 78:21–30)
And He says:
“So I have warned you of a blazing Fire: [14] none shall enter it except the most wretched, [15] who denied and turned away.” [16] (Qur’an 92:14–16)
Likewise He says:
“Whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal will have Jahannam; he will neither die therein nor live.” (Qur’an 20:74)
And He says:
“Faces that Day will be downcast, [2] laboring and exhausted, [3] scorched by a blazing Fire, [4] made to drink from a scalding spring. [5] Their only food will be dry, thorny bush, [6] neither nourishing nor relieving hunger.” [7] (Qur’an 88:2–7)
And He says:
“No indeed! When the earth is crushed utterly, [21] and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, [22] and Jahannam is brought forth on that Day—on that Day man will remember, but how will remembrance avail him? [23] He will say, ‘Oh, would that I had sent something ahead for my life!’ [24] That Day none will punish as He punishes, [25] and none will bind as He binds.” [26] (Qur’an 89:21–26)
And He says:
“But those who disbelieve in Our signs—they are the people of misfortune; [19] upon them is a Fire closed in.” [20] (Qur’an 90:19–20)
And He says:
“Woe to every backbiter, slanderer, [1] who amassed wealth and counted it over, [2] thinking his wealth would make him eternal. [3] No indeed! He will surely be hurled into the Crusher. [4] And what will make you understand what the Crusher is? [5] It is Allah’s kindled Fire, [6] which rises up to the hearts. [7] It will be closed in upon them, [8] in columns outstretched.” [9] (Qur’an 104:1–9)
Ibn al-Mubarak (1) narrated—on the authority of Khalid ibn Abi ‘Imran, with his chain—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, the Fire will consume its inhabitants; when it has surged up to their hearts it will halt, then it will return to what it was, confront them once more, and devour them until it again rises to their hearts.”
