the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The people of Paradise will enter Paradise hairless, beardless, with kohl-lined eyes, all of them thirty-three years of age.”
Al-Tirmidhi also recorded it through the narration of ʿImran ibn Dawud al-Qattan, after which he remarked: “This is a ḥasan, gharīb report.” (1)
Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Qāsim ibn Hāshim narrated to us; Ṣafwān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Rawwād ibn Jarrāḥ al-ʿAsqalānī narrated to me; al-Awzāʿī narrated to us, from Hārūn ibn Riʾāb, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The people of Paradise will enter Paradise with the stature of Adam—sixty cubits, measured by the cubit of an angel; with the beauty of Joseph; with the age of Jesus, thirty-three years; and with the speech of Muhammad. They will be hairless, beardless, and their eyes will be darkened with kohl.”
Abu Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd likewise transmitted it: Maḥmūd ibn Khālid and ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd related to us, saying: ʿUmar narrated to us, from al-Awzāʿī, from Hārūn ibn Riʾāb, from Anas ibn Mālik—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The inhabitants of Paradise will be resurrected in the likeness of Adam at the age of thirty-three years—hairless, beardless, and with kohl-lined eyes. They will then be led to a tree in Paradise and clothed from it; their garments will never wear out, nor will their youth ever diminish.” (2)
Abu Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd further said: Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to us, that Darrāj Abū al-Samḥ related to him, from Abū al-Haytham, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever from among the people of Paradise dies—whether young or old—will be restored to the age of thirty-three years in Paradise; they will never exceed that age. The same applies to the people of the Fire.”
Al-Tirmidhi also reported it from Suwayd ibn Naṣr, from Ibn al-Mubārak, from Rushdayn ibn Saʿd, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith… and he mentioned it. And Allah knows best. (3)
Imam Ahmad said: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAṭāʾ al-Khaffāf al-ʿAjalī related to us, from Saʿīd, from Qatādah, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Muʿādh—who said: The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said:
“The believers will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection hairless, beardless, with kohl-lined eyes, all of them thirty-three years old.”
This chain is broken between Shahr and Muʿādh; the gap is such that, had it been transmitted in full, the narrator would have cited someone even further removed than Shahr. It nevertheless indicates that they will be brought forth from their graves in that very form. (4)
It was mentioned earlier (5) that everyone is raised upon the state in which he died; thereafter their stature—both height and breadth—will be altered, each person according to his station, when they enter either the Garden or the Fire, as will be detailed, Allah willing.
