I grant you the whole world and the like of it along with it?’ He will reply, ‘Are You making fun of me while You are the Lord of all creation?’ [Ibn Masʿūd said: then Allah—glorified and exalted is He—will say, ‘No, but I am able to do that.’] (1).
Al-Bayhaqī also cited this ḥadīth after the above with the chain of Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from Ibn Masʿūd, and he recorded it as a mawqūf report.
Al-Bayhaqī said:
‘Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Manṣūr ibn Abī Muzāḥim narrated to us; Abū Saʿīd al-Muʾaddib narrated to us from Ziyād al-Numayrī, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘The ṣirāṭ is as fine as a hair, or as sharp as the edge of a sword. The angels will be rescuing the believing men and believing women, and Gabriel—peace be upon him—will be holding the back of my garment while I keep saying, “My Lord, grant safety, grant safety.” On that day those who slip—men and women—will be many.’”
Al-Bayhaqī afterwards transmitted, with the chain of Saʿīd ibn Zarbī, from Yazīd al-Raqāshī, from Anas, a marfūʿ narration similar to the above but in fuller detail. Its chain is weak, yet it is strengthened by what precedes it, and Allah knows best.
Ath-Thawrī narrated, from Ḥuṣayn, from Mujāhid, from Junādah ibn Abī Umayyah, who said:
“You are recorded with Allah by your names, your distinguishing marks, your ornaments, your whispered confidences, and your gatherings. When the Day of Resurrection comes it will be proclaimed, ‘So-and-so, here is your light; so-and-so, you have no light,’” and he recited: Their light will run before them and on their right hands (al-Ḥadīd 57:12).
Al-Ḍaḥḥāk said: On the Day of Resurrection everyone is first given a light; when they reach the ṣirāṭ the light of the hypocrites is extinguished. When the believers see this they fear that their own light may likewise be put out, just as the hypocrites’ was, so they say: Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us; surely You have power over all things (at-Taḥrīm 66:8).
Isḥāq ibn Bishr Abū Ḥudhayfah reported:
Ibn Jurayj told us, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah will call people on the Day of Resurrection by their names, thereby concealing them before His servants. When they reach the Bridge, Allah will give every believer a light and every hypocrite a light. Once they are standing level upon the Bridge, Allah will strip the light from the hypocrite men and hypocrite women. The hypocrites will then say to the believers, Wait for us that we may borrow some of your light (al-Ḥadīd 57:13), while the believers will say, Our Lord, complete for us our light (at-Taḥrīm 66:8). At that moment no one will remember anyone else.” (2).
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said:
Abū ʿUbayd Allah, the nephew of Ibn Wahb, narrated to us; my uncle informed us; Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb (3) narrated to us, from Saʿd ibn Masʿūd, who said that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr reported that he heard Abū ad-Dardāʾ and Abū Dharr relate from the Prophet ﷺ that he said:
“I am the first to be granted permission on the Day of Resurrection to prostrate, and the first to be granted permission to …”
