then those who follow them, like the brightest star in the sky, then likewise. After that, intercession will become permissible, and they will intercede until everyone who said, “There is no deity but Allah,” and in whose heart there was as much goodness as a single barley grain, is brought out of the Fire. They will be placed in an open court at the entrance of Paradise, and the people of Paradise will sprinkle water over them until they grow the way a seed sprouts in the silt left by a flood. The burn-marks will vanish, and they will keep asking until they are granted this world and ten times its like along with it (1).
Muslim also recorded:
Muhammad ibn Ṭarīf ibn Khalīfah al-Bajalī narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us; Abū Mālik al-Ashjaʿī narrated to us from Abū Ḥāzim, from Abū Hurayrah—and Abū Mālik (also) from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah—both of them said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Allah, Exalted is He, will gather all people. When Paradise is brought near to the believers, they will rise and go to Adam, saying: ‘Our father, open Paradise for us.’ He will reply: ‘Nothing expelled you from Paradise except your father Adam’s sin. I am not fit for that task. Go to my son Abraham, the Friend of Allah.’
“Abraham (peace be upon him) will say: ‘I am not fit for that; I was only a friend from beyond, beyond. Go to Moses, the one to whom Allah spoke directly.’
“They will go to Moses (peace be upon him), and he will say: ‘I am not fit for that; go to Jesus, the word of Allah and His spirit.’
“Jesus (peace be upon him) will say: ‘I am not fit for that; go to Muhammad.’ They will come to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he will stand, and permission will be granted to him. Trust (amānah) and kinship (raḥim) will be sent forth and will stand on the two sides of the bridge—one to the right and one to the left—and the first of you will cross it like lightning.”
I asked, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what is crossing like lightning?”
He said, “Have you not seen lightning, how it flashes and returns in the twinkling of an eye? Then (others cross) like the wind, then like birds, and like the swiftest horses (2). Their deeds carry them on, while your Prophet stands on the bridge saying, ‘Lord, grant safety, grant safety,’ until the deeds of the servants grow too weak, so that a man comes and cannot move forward except by crawling.”
He added: “On the sides of the bridge are hooks suspended, commanded to seize whom they are ordered to seize: some will escape with scratches, and others will be pitched headlong into the Fire. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Abū Hurayrah, the depth of Jahannam is seventy years (3).”
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said:
Abū Khaythamah narrated to us; ʿAffān ibn Muslim narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from ʿUmārah al-Qurashī, from Abū Burdah, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Allah will gather the nations on one plain. When He wishes to pass judgment among His creation, He will present to every people what they used to worship, and they will follow it until it hurls them into the Fire. Then our Lord will come to us while we are on a high place and will say, ‘Who are you?’ We will answer, ‘We are the Muslims.’ He will ask, ‘What are you waiting for?’ and we will say, ‘We are waiting for our Lord.’ He will say, ‘Do you recognize Him if you see Him?’ We will reply, ‘Yes.’ He will say, ‘How do you recognize Him when you have never seen Him?’ We will say, ‘There is nothing comparable to Him.’ Then He will reveal Himself to us, smiling, and will say, ‘Rejoice, O community of Muslims! For there is none among you except that I have placed in the Fire, in his stead, a Jew or a Christian.’ ”
