determined in pleading your case than the believers will be in their plea before the Compeller on that Day, once it has become clear that they themselves are safe, on behalf of their brothers.
They will say,
“Our Lord, our brothers used to pray with us, fast with us, and act with us.”
Allah, Exalted is He, will say,
“Go, and whoever you find whose heart contains faith the weight of a dinar, bring him out.”
Allah will forbid the Fire to touch their forms. They will go (to them), and some of those people will be immersed in the Fire up to their feet, others up to mid-calf. They will bring out all whom they recognise, then return.
He will say,
“Go back; whoever you find whose heart contains faith the weight of half a dinar, bring him out.”
They will bring out those they recognise, then return once more.
He will say,
“Go; whoever you find whose heart contains faith the weight of a speck of dust, bring him out.”
They will bring out those they recognise.
Abu Saʿīd said, “If you do not believe me, then recite:
‘Indeed, Allah does not wrong even an atom’s weight; and if there is a good deed, He multiplies it.’ ⦗4:40⦘”
Then the prophets, the angels, and the believers will intercede. The Compeller—blessed and exalted is He—will say, “There remains My intercession.” He will take a handful, bring out people who have been utterly burnt, and cast them into a river at the gates of Paradise called the River of Life. They will sprout on its banks as a seed sprouts in the silt of a flood; you have surely seen it beside a rock or a tree—what faces the sun is green, and what faces the shade is white. They will emerge gleaming like pearls; necklaces will be placed around their necks, and they will enter Paradise.
The people of Paradise will say, “These are the freed ones of the All-Merciful; He admitted them to Paradise without any deed they performed or any good they sent ahead.”
It will be said to them, “Yours is what you have seen, and the like of it along with it.” (1)
Muslim also recorded:
ʿUbayd Allah ibn Saʿid and Ishaq ibn Mansur both narrated to us from Rawḥ. ʿUbayd Allah said: Rawḥ ibn ʿUbādah al-Qaysi narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj narrated to us; Abu al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah being asked about al-wurūd (the crossing). He replied, “We shall come on the Day of Resurrection at such-and-such a level—look which of those is higher above the people (2). Then the nations will be summoned with their idols and whatever they used to worship, one after another. After that our Lord will come to us and say, ‘Whom are you waiting for?’ They will answer, ‘We are waiting for our Lord.’ He will say, ‘I am your Lord.’ They will reply, ‘[We shall wait] until we look upon You.’ He will then reveal Himself to them, smiling.”
He added: “He will lead them on and they will follow Him. Every one of them, whether hypocrite or believer, will be given a light, and they will follow Him. Over the bridge across Hell there will be hooks and barbs that seize whom Allah wills. Then the light of the hypocrites will be extinguished, while the believers will be delivered. The first group to be saved will have faces shining like the full moon—seventy thousand, without reckoning—then those who follow them, like the brightest star in the sky, then…"
