and nine hundred thousand. I said, “My ummah will never reach such a number.” He replied, “I shall make up the rest for you from the Bedouins.” He said: Thābit al-Bunnānī related it from Abū Yazīd al-Madani, from him. ⦗1⦘
Another ḥadīth:
Al-Bazzār said: Maḥmūd ibn Bakr narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from ʿĪsā, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khuḍrī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“Seventy thousand of my ummah will enter Paradise without any reckoning.”
ʿUkkāshah then arose and said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He make me one of them.”
He answered, “O Allah, make him one of them.”
Another man stood up and said, “Pray to Allah that He make me one of them.”
He said, “O Allah, make him one of them.”
The people fell silent. Then some of them said to others, “If only we had said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He make us among them.’”
He ﷺ said, “ʿUkkāshah and his companion have beaten you to it. Had you asked, I would have supplicated; and had I supplicated, it would have been granted.” ⦗2⦘
Another report is related by al-Bayhaqī in his book “al-Baʿth wa’l-Nushūr,” through al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Nibrās: Thābit ibn Aslam al-Bunnānī narrated to me, from Abū Yazīd al-Madani, from ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm al-Anṣārī, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained away from us for three days, coming out only for the obligatory prayers and then returning. On the fourth day he came out to us, and we said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, you have kept away from us so long that we feared something might have happened.’
“He replied, ‘Nothing has happened except good. My Lord—Exalted is He—has promised me that He will admit into Paradise from my ummah seventy thousand without reckoning. During these three days I asked my Lord for more, and I found my Lord bountiful, munificent and generous, so He granted me, along with each of the seventy thousand, another seventy thousand.’
“I said, ‘My Lord, will my ummah reach so great a number?’ He said, ‘I shall complete the number for you from the Bedouins.’”
Concerning this al-Ḍaḥḥāk the scholars have spoken critically; al-Nasāʾī said: “He is to be abandoned.”
Earlier, in the ḥadīths concerning the Pond, a long narration was cited on the authority of Saʿīd, from Ḥudhayfah, from the Prophet ﷺ, in which he said: “He also gave me the glad tidings that with me are seventy thousand, and with every thousand another seventy thousand who will not be called to account.” It was recorded by Aḥmad. ⦗3⦘
Ibn al-Athīr relates, in the biography of ʿĀmir ibn ʿUmayr, who was present at the Farewell Pilgrimage, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed I found my Lord magnanimous; He has granted me seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning, and with each one seventy
