who said: “I heard Abū Umāmah say, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“My Lord has promised me that He will admit into Paradise from my ummah seventy thousand, and with every thousand another seventy thousand, without any reckoning and without any punishment—together with three handfuls from the handfuls of my Lord, exalted is He.”’
The wording is that of Ibn Abī Shaybah; al-Ṭabarānī does not contain the phrase, “and with every thousand another seventy thousand.” ⦗1⦘
[Another chain from Abū Umāmah]
Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim said: Duḥaym narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr narrated from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir and Abū al-Yamān al-Hawzanī ⦗2⦘, from Abū Umāmah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:
“Indeed Allah has promised me that He will admit into Paradise from my ummah seventy thousand without reckoning.”
Yazīd ibn al-Akhnas remarked, “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, those people in your ummah are no more than the reddish fly among all the other flies!”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Yet Allah has promised me seventy thousand, and with every thousand another seventy thousand, and He has granted me three additional handfuls.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Ḍiyāʾ said: Its narrators are the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ, except for al-Hawzanī—his name is ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Luḥayy—and I know of no criticism against him. ⦗3⦘
[Another hadith]
al-Ṭabarānī said: Aḥmad ibn Khulayd narrated to us; Abū Tawbah narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Sallām narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Sallām, who said that he heard Abū Sallām say: ʿĀmir ibn Zayd al-Bikālī related to me that he heard ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd al-Sulamī say:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “My Lord has promised me that He will admit into Paradise from my ummah seventy thousand without reckoning. Then each of those thousand will intercede for seventy thousand, after which my Lord, exalted be He, will take three handfuls with His two Hands.”
ʿUmar magnified Allah and said, “As for the first seventy thousand, Allah will allow them to intercede on behalf of their fathers, their sons, and their clans, and I hope that Allah will place me in one of the final handfuls.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Ḍiyāʾ commented: I am unaware of any defect in this chain; Allah knows best. ⦗4⦘
