“Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Zayd ibn al-Ḥubbāb narrated to us; Suhayl ⦗1⦘ ibn ʿAbd Allah—the brother of Ḥazm al-Quṭaʿī—narrated to us; Thābit al-Bunānī narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited (or chanted) the verse:
‘He alone is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive.’ (al-Muddaththir 56)
He then said: ‘Allah, Blessed and Exalted, declares: I am truly worthy of being feared, so let no other deity be set up alongside Me. Whoever fears to associate anything with Me, I am indeed worthy of forgiving him.’” ⦗2⦘
Ibn Mājah also said:
“Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Aʿyan narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Yaḥyā al-Shaybānī narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
‘We were with the Prophet ﷺ on one of his campaigns. He passed by some people and asked, “Who are you?” They said, “We are Muslims.” A woman was there stoking her oven with stones, and her little son was with her; whenever the blaze flared up she would draw him aside. She came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, “Are you the Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Yes.” She said, “May my father and mother be your ransom! Is Allah not the Most Merciful of those who show mercy?” He said, “Indeed.” She said, “And is Allah not more merciful to His servants than a mother to her child?” He said, “Indeed.” She said, “A mother would never cast her child into the Fire.” At this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bent his head and wept; then he raised it and said, “Allah—Mighty and Majestic—is He—does not punish any of His servants except the insolent rebel who defies Allah and refuses to say: lā ilāha illā Allah (there is no god but Allah).”’ Its chain is weak and its wording is unusual. ⦗3⦘
Allah, Exalted is He, has also said:
“None will burn in it except the most wretched (15), who denied and turned away.” (al-Layl 15-16)
And He said:
“But he neither affirmed the truth nor prayed (31); rather, he denied and turned away (32); then he went back to his family strutting arrogantly (33)—woe to you, and again woe!” (al-Qiyāmah 31-34)
Al-Bukhārī said:
“Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Abū Ghassān narrated to us; Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to us, from his father, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, who said:
‘Captives were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A woman among them, whose breasts were overflowing with milk, was running about; whenever she found an infant among the captives she would take him, press him to her belly, and nurse him. The Prophet ﷺ said to us, “Do you think this woman would cast her child into the Fire?” We replied, “No, not if she can help it.” He said, “Allah is more merciful to His servants than this woman is to her child.”’ Muslim likewise transmitted it from Ḥasan al-Ḥulwānī and Muḥammad ibn Sahl ibn ʿAskar, both from Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, from Abū Ghassān Muḥammad ibn Muṭarrif, with this chain. ⦗4⦘ In another wording: “By Allah, Allah is more merciful to His servants than this woman is to her child.” ⦗5⦘
