He said: “Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān arrived in Madinah on the last occasion he visited it. He delivered a sermon to us, then pulled from the sleeve of his garment a tuft of hair and said:
‘I never thought anyone would do this except the Jews. The Prophet ﷺ called it falsehood—meaning attaching hair to hair.’ ” Ghundar corroborated this report from Shuʿbah (1).
It is remarkable that Muslim transmitted it through several routes from Ghundar on the authority of Shuʿbah (2), and also through Qatādah from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib (3) with the same wording (4).
Another ḥadīth:
Al-Bukhārī said: Saʿīd ibn Talīd narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us (5); he informed me that Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim related from Ayyūb, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“While a dog was circling around a well, on the verge of dying from thirst, a prostitute from among the prostitutes of the Children of Israel saw it. She removed her leather sock, drew water for it, and gave it a drink; and because of that she was forgiven.” (7)
Muslim likewise narrated it from Abū al-Ṭāhir ibn al-Sarḥ, from Ibn Wahb, with the same chain (8).
Another ḥadīth:
Al-Bukhārī (9) said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn (10) Asmāʾ narrated to us; Juwayriyah narrated to us; from Nāfiʿ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“A woman was punished because of a cat she had confined until it died; she therefore entered the Fire on its account. She neither provided it food nor gave it water while she held it captive, nor did she release it so that it might eat of the insects of the earth.” (11)
Muslim also transmitted it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Asmāʾ through the same chain (12).
