Muslim also recorded the first chain through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah and Sufyān al-Thawrī, both from Abū al-Zinād (1).
Another ḥadīth:
Al-Bukhārī said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd (2) narrated to us, from his father, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“Among the nations that came before you there were inspired persons (muḥaddathūn); and if there is anyone of that sort in my community, it is ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.” (3)(4)
Muslim did not transmit this ḥadīth through this particular chain (5). It has also been reported by Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah (6).
Another ḥadīth:
Al-Bukhārī (7) said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maslamah narrated to us, from Mālik, from Ibn Shihāb, from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said:
“I heard Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān, in the year he performed ḥajj, speaking from the pulpit. He took hold of a lock of hair that was in a guard’s hand (8)(9) and said, ‘People of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid things like this and say: The Children of Israel perished only when their women adopted such practices.’ ”
Muslim (10) and Abū Dāwūd (11) likewise narrated it from Mālik, and it has also been reported with similar wording by Maʿmar, Yūnus, and Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah from al-Zuhrī.
Al-Tirmidhī said: “A sound ḥadīth.” (12)
Al-Bukhārī also said: Ādam narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Murrah narrated to us. He said: “I heard Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib …”
