“Whoever has wronged his brother in any way must seek his pardon from him today, for on that Day there will be neither dinar nor dirham. Before the accounting is over, some of his good deeds will be taken from him; and if he has no good deeds left, some of his brother’s sins will be placed upon him.” Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim transmitted this. ⦗1⦘
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also related—through al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Do you know who the bankrupt (muflis) is?” They replied, “The one who possesses neither dirham nor dinar.” He said, “The bankrupt from my community is the one who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting, and zakāh, yet he will have reviled this person, slandered that one, consumed another’s wealth, shed someone’s blood, and struck yet another. Each of them will be recompensed from his good deeds, and if his good deeds are exhausted before the claims are settled, their sins will be transferred onto him; then he will be hurled into the Fire.” ⦗2⦘
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā further said: al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ al-Sakūnī ⦗3⦘ narrated to us; al-Qāsim ibn Mālik al-Muzanī informed us; from Layth; from Mujāhid; from Ibn ʿUmar, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
“Do not die while you still owe a debt, for there will be no dinar nor dirham there. Only deeds will be exchanged—deed for deed—and your Lord does not wrong anyone.” This was also related through two other chains from Ibn ʿUmar with the same wording. ⦗4⦘
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Bakr ibn Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated to us; from Mūsā ibn ʿUlayy ibn Rabāḥ; from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir; from Jābir, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated:
“A servant will indeed come on the Day of Resurrection rejoicing in his good deeds. Then a man will appear and say, ‘My Lord, this person wronged me.’ Some of the servant’s good deeds will be taken and added to the account of the one he wronged. This will continue until no good deeds remain. When another claimant arrives, the servant’s sins will be examined and placed alongside the sins of the wronged man. Thus compensation will go on—his good deeds being taken and the sins of those he oppressed returned to him—until he is finally cast into the Fire.” ⦗5⦘
Imām Aḥmad reported: Yazīd narrated to us; Ṣadaqah ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Abū ʿImrān al-Jawni narrated to us; from Yazīd ibn Bābānūs; from ʿĀʾishah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The ledgers before Allah are three. One ledger Allah cares nothing about; another He leaves nothing from; and a third He will never forgive. The ledger that He will never forgive is associating partners with Allah. Allah—exalted is He—has said: ‘Whoever associates others with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise to him’ (al-Māʾidah 72). The ledger that Allah cares nothing about is a servant’s wronging himself in what lies between him and his Lord—such as a day of fasting he abandoned or a prayer he neglected—for indeed…"
