—do I grant.’ Allah, exalted is He, says:
“Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers” (Āl ʿImrān 85). ⦗1⦘
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said: ‘Abdah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Marwazī narrated to us; Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd al-Kalāʿī informed us; Salamah ibn Kulthūm narrated to us; from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“On the Day of Resurrection the judges will be brought forward—both those who were negligent and those who overstepped. Allah, Most High, will say, ‘You were the treasurers of My earth, the shepherds of My flock, the executors of My will.’ Then He will say to the one who fell short, ‘What moved you to do what you did?’ ⦗2⦘ He will reply, ‘Compassion.’ Allah—majestic is His glory—will say, ‘Are you more compassionate toward My servants than I am?’
“Next He will say to the one who exceeded the bounds, ‘What moved you to do what you did?’ He will answer, ‘I became angry for Your sake.’ Allah will say, ‘Are you more wrathful than I am?’ He will then command, ‘Take them away and block with them one of the corners of Hell.’” ⦗3⦘
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā—may Allah have mercy on him—further related: Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Sulaym narrated to us; from Ibn Khuthaym; from Abū al-Zubayr; from Jābir, who said:
When the emigrants who had gone to Abyssinia returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he asked, “Will you not tell me the most remarkable thing you saw in Abyssinia?” Some young men answered, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah. While we were sitting one day, an elderly woman passed by carrying a water-skin on her head. A youth came up behind her, slipped one hand between her shoulders and shoved her. She fell to her knees and the water-skin shattered. When she rose she turned to him and said, ‘Treacherous boy, you will know! When Allah sets up the Throne for the final judgment, gathers the first and the last, and when hands and feet speak about what they used to earn—you will know how my case and yours are decided tomorrow.’”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commented, “She spoke the truth. How can Allah sanctify a people who do not exact justice from their strong on behalf of their weak?” ⦗4⦘
It has already been mentioned in the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Unays that Allah, exalted is He, will call out to the servants on the Day of Resurrection, saying: “I am the King, I am the Judge. It is not fitting for anyone of the people of Paradise to enter Paradise while someone from the people of the Fire still has a grievance against him, nor for anyone of the people of the Fire to enter the Fire while someone from the people of Paradise still has a grievance against him—even for a single slap.” This was recorded by Aḥmad and cited in abridged form by al-Bukhārī in his Ṣaḥīḥ. ⦗5⦘
Imām Mālik likewise transmitted—from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Prophet ﷺ
