This ḥadīth is corroborated by an authentic report in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, transmitted through another chain from Abū Hurayrah who relates that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The first for whom the Fire will be ignited on the Day of Resurrection are three: the scholar, the giver of charity, and the combatant—those who sought the life of this world by their deeds.” (1)
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said: “[Muḥammad ibn] ʿUthmān ibn Maʿbad narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Bakkār ibn Bilāl, the judge of Damascus, narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Bashīr narrated to us; from Qatādah; from al-Ḥasan; from Ḥurayth ibn Qabīṣah; from Abū Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘The first matter for which a man will be called to account is his prayer. If it is sound, the rest of his deeds will be sound; if it is unsound, the rest of his deeds will be unsound. Thereafter Allah—Exalted is He—says, “Look to see whether My servant has any supererogatory prayer; if he has such voluntary acts, complete his obligatory prayer with them.” The same procedure is then applied to the rest of the obligatory duties.’”
Al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī recorded this ḥadīth as well through the narration of Hammām from Qatādah, and al-Tirmidhī remarked, “It is ḥasan gharīb.” Al-Nasāʾī also related it through ʿImrān ibn Dāwud Abū al-ʿAwwām, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Rāfiʿ, from Abū Hurayrah. (2)
Imām Aḥmad said: “Abū al-Naḍr narrated to us; al-Mubārak—meaning Ibn Faḍālah—narrated to us; from al-Ḥasan; from Abū Hurayrah; I believe he attributed it to the Prophet ﷺ:
‘The owned slave will certainly be taken to account regarding his prayer. If it is found deficient he will be asked, “Why did you fall short?” He will answer, “My Lord, You placed a master over me who kept me occupied and away from my prayer.” Allah will say, “Yet I saw you stealing from his property for yourself; could you not have ‘stolen’ for yourself from your own deeds—or from his?” Thus Allah will establish the proof against him.’ (3)”
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said: “[ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us;] Mubārak ibn Faḍālah narrated to us; al-Ḥasan narrated to us, saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The first thing a woman will be asked about on the Day of Resurrection is her prayer, then about her husband—how she treated him.’” This is a sound mursal report.
Aḥmad further said: “Abū Saʿīd, the client of Banī Hāshim, narrated to us; ʿAbbād ibn Rāshid narrated to us.” He said: “Al-Ḥasan narrated to us; Abū Hurayrah narrated to us while we were in Madinah, and he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Deeds will approach on the Day of Resurrection. Prayer will come forward and say, “My Lord, I am the prayer.” He will say, “You are upon good.” Then charity will come and say, “My Lord, I am charity.” He will say, “You are upon good.” Then fasting will come and say, “My Lord, I am fasting.” He will say, “You are upon good.” Thus each deed will arrive, each of them saying, “You are upon good.” Then Islam will come and say, “My Lord, You are al-Salām, and I am Islam.” Allah will say, “You are upon good. With you today I take, and by you—”’
