—how you used it; about your wealth—where you earned it, on what you spent it; and what you did with the knowledge you possessed.” (1)
Al-Bayhaqi narrated, through ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak, from Sharik ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Hilal, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUkaym, who said:
Whenever ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud related this ḥadith he would add: “There is none of you but that Allah will be alone with him, just as one of you might be alone with the full moon on a clear night. The Lord, Exalted is He, will say: ‘My servant, what has deceived you concerning Me? My servant, what did you do with what you knew? How did you answer the messengers?’”
Al-Bayhaqi placed this report immediately after the ḥadith he transmitted through Muḥall ibn Khalifah, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him:
“Each of you will surely stand before Allah the Exalted with no barrier between him and Allah and no interpreter to translate for him. He will say, ‘Did I not give you wealth?’ The man will reply, ‘Yes.’ He will say, ‘Did I not send a messenger to you?’ He will reply, ‘Yes.’ Then he will look to his right and see nothing but the Fire, and he will look to his left and see nothing but the Fire. So guard yourselves against the Fire, even if with half a date; and if you cannot find that, then with a kind word.” Al-Bukhari recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (2).
Imam Ahmad said: Bahz and ʿAffān narrated to us, saying: Hammām narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Ṣafwān ibn Muḥriz, who said:
“I was holding the hand of Ibn ʿUmar when a man came and asked, ‘How did you hear the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, speak about the private discourse (al-najwā) on the Day of Resurrection?’ He replied, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Allah will draw the believer near, place His veil over him, and hide him from the people. He will make him acknowledge his sins, saying: ‘Do you recognize such-and-such sin? Do you recognize such-and-such sin? Do you recognize such-and-such sin?’ until the servant confesses his sins and thinks that he is ruined. Then He will say: ‘I concealed them for you in the world, and today I forgive you,’ and he will be given the record of his good deeds in his right hand. As for the disbelievers and hypocrites, the witnesses will proclaim: ‘These are the ones who lied against their Lord; surely the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers.’ (Hud 18).”’” Al-Bukhari and Muslim included it in the two Ṣaḥīḥs from the narration of Qatādah (3).
Ahmad also said: Bahz and ʿAffān narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us; Ishaq ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said:
“On the Day of Resurrection Allah will say: ‘O son of Adam, I carried you on horses and camels, married you to women, and allowed you to reside securely and to lead—so where is the gratitude for all that?’” (4)
Muslim likewise transmitted, in a narration from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said in a ḥadith—
