Imam Aḥmad also said:
“Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us; Shuʿbah related to us, from Sulaymān—who is al-Aʿmash—from Mundhir al-Thawrī, from some of their elders, from Abū Dharr, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said … (ḥ).
And Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; al-Aʿmash related to us, from Mundhir ibn Yaʿlā, from his shaykhs, from Abū Dharr, and he quoted it in meaning:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw two sheep butting one another and said,
‘O Abū Dharr, do you know why they are butting?’
He replied, ‘No.’
He said, ‘Allah, however, knows, and He will judge between them.’
This chain is good and sound. (1)
Al-Qurṭubī said: Shuʿbah transmitted it from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, from his father, from Abū Dharr, from the Prophet ﷺ with the same wording.
Al-Qurṭubī also said: Layth ibn Abī Sulaym related, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Tharwān, from al-Huzayl, from Abū Dharr, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by two sheep butting each other and said,
‘Allah will most certainly grant retaliation on the Day of Resurrection: this hornless one against that horned one.’ (2)
He added: Ibn Wahb reported, from Ibn Luhayʿah and ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, from Bakr ibn Sawādah, that Abū Sālim al-Jayshānī told him: Thābit ibn Ṭarīf requested permission to enter upon Abū Dharr and heard him raising his voice. Abū Dharr said, ‘By Allah, were it not for the Day of Disputation I would have disgraced you!’ I entered and asked, ‘What is the matter with you, O Abū Dharr?’ He replied, ‘This woman.’ I said, ‘And what would prevent you from striking her?’ He said, ‘By Him in whose hand is my soul—or, he said, by Him in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad— the sheep will certainly be questioned as to why it butted its companion, and even an inanimate object will be questioned as to why it injured a man’s finger.’
Aḥmad further said: Ḥasan narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us; Darrāj narrated to us, from Abū al-Haytham, from Abū Saʿīd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
‘By Him in whose hand is my soul, the created beings will indeed dispute on the Day of Resurrection— even two sheep over the reason they butted one another.’ (3)
And Imam Aḥmad said: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah narrated to us; Abū Ḥayyān narrated to us, from Abū Zurʿah ibn ʿAmr ibn Jarīr, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us and spoke about ghulul (misappropriating spoils of war), treating it as something very grave and stressing its seriousness. He then said:
‘I must not find one of you coming on the Day of Resurrection with a camel groaning on his neck and saying, “O Messenger of Allah, help me!” while I will say, “I possess nothing for you; I have already conveyed.”
I must not find one of you coming on the Day of Resurrection with a sheep bleating on his neck and saying, “O Messenger of Allah, help me!” while I will say, “I possess nothing for you; I have already conveyed.”
I must not find one of you coming on the Day of Resurrection with a horse neighing on his neck and saying, “O Messenger of Allah, help me!” while I will say, “I possess nothing for you; I have already conveyed.”
I must not find one of you coming on the Day of Resurrection with a soul crying out on his neck and saying, “O Messenger of Allah, help me!” while I will reply:’
