the Self-Subsisting, and ruined indeed is he who bears wrongdoing. (111) But whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer shall have no fear of injustice nor of any curtailment. (112) In other words, none of his good deeds will be reduced—that is the haḍm (diminution)—and no sin of anyone else will be laid upon him—that is the injustice.
[Section]
The very first creatures for whom Allah, exalted is He, will settle scores on the Day of Resurrection are the animals, before the jinn and mankind—these two being the “two weighty kinds,” mankind a weight and the jinn a weight.
The proof that the rest of the animals will also be gathered is His statement:
“Not a creature walks the earth nor a bird flying on its two wings but they are communities like you. We have left nothing out of the Book; then to their Lord they will be gathered. (38)” (Al-Anʿām 6:38)
And His statement:
“And when the wild beasts are gathered, (5)” (At-Takwīr 81:5).
ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad said: We were told by ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad and Abū Yaḥyā al-Bazzār who said: We were told by Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr, we were told by Shuʿbah, from al-ʿAwwām ibn Murājim (1) of Banū Qays ibn Thaʿlabah, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Verily, for the jammāʾ (hornless sheep) retribution will be taken from the qarnāʾ (horned sheep) on the Day of Resurrection.” (2)
Imam Aḥmad said: We were told by Ibn Abī ʿAdī and Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar, from Shuʿbah: I heard al-ʿAlāʾ narrate, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Rights will certainly be restored to those entitled to them on the Day of Resurrection until even the jammāʾ (hornless sheep) is avenged against the qarnāʾ (horned sheep) that butted it.” This chain is sound according to the criteria of Muslim, though he did not include it. (3)
Imam Aḥmad also said: We were told by ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, we were told by Ḥammād, from Wāṣil, from Yaḥyā ibn ʿUqayl, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Retribution will be taken among the creatures, some from others—until for the jammāʾ (hornless) from the qarnāʾ (horned), and even for the ant from the ant.” Aḥmad alone related it. (4)
ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad said: I found this ḥadith in my father’s book in his own handwriting: We were told by ʿUbayd Allah (5) ibn Muḥammad, we were told by Ḥammād ibn Salamah, we were told by Layth, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Tharwān, from al-Huzayl ibn Shuraḥbīl, from Abū Dharr that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting while two sheep were grazing; one of them butted the other and caused it to miscarry. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed. Someone asked, “What makes you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied:
“I am amazed at her. By Him in whose hand is my soul, full compensation will certainly be taken for her on the Day of Resurrection.” (6)
