[Section]
Allah, exalted is He, says:
“So they became scattered dust, (6) and you will be [divided into] three groups: (7) the people of the right—what are the people of the right? (8) and the people of the left—what are the people of the left? (9) and the foremost, the foremost— (10) those are the ones brought near, (11) in gardens of bliss …” (Al-Wāqiʿah 56:6-12)
When the Seat set aside for judgment is placed, the disbelievers will separate from the believers at the gathering-place, moving to the left, while the believers remain to the right of the Throne, some of them standing directly before it.
Allah, exalted is He, says:
“But today, O you who were criminals, stand apart! (59)” (Yā Sīn 36:59)
He also says:
“Then We shall say to those who associated others with Allah, ‘Stay where you are—you and your partners.’ Then We shall separate them …” (Yūnus 10:28)
And He says:
“You will see every community kneeling; every community will be summoned to its record: ‘Today you will be repaid for what you used to do.’” (Al-Jāthiyah 45:28)
Thus all creatures stand before the Lord of the worlds. Perspiration submerges most of them, and their hardship reaches its utmost limit. People are ranked according to their deeds, as related in the ḥadiths: humbled and silent. No one speaks except by His leave, and on that Day none will speak save the prophets and messengers, their nations gathered around them.
The Book of Deeds—encompassing the works of the first and the last—is laid open, omitting neither small nor great without counting it. Everything the creation did, Allah recorded though they forgot, and the guardian angels wrote it down for them, as Allah, Most High, says:
“On that Day man will be informed of what he sent forward and what he left behind. (13) Rather, man will be a witness against himself, (14) even though he may offer his excuses.” (Al-Qiyāmah 75:13-15)
He also says:
“We have fastened every person’s destiny to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection We shall bring forth for him a book which he will find spread open. (13) ‘Read your book; today your own self suffices as an accountant against you.’” (Al-Isrāʾ 17:13-14)
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said, “O son of Adam, your Lord has indeed been just to you when He made you the accountant of yourself.”
The Balance is erected to weigh deeds, good and evil; the ṣirāṭ (bridge) is stretched across the back of Jahannam; angels surround mankind and the jinn; Hell is brought into view and the abode of bliss drawn near. The Lord, glorified be He, reveals Himself to decide between His servants; the earth shines with the light of its Lord; the scrolls are read; the angels testify against the children of Adam for what they did, and even the earth testifies to what they did upon its surface. Whoever confesses—so be it; otherwise a seal is set upon his mouth and his limbs speak about what they earned, by night or by day.
Concerning the earth, Allah the Exalted says:
“On that Day it will report its news, (4) for your Lord will have inspired it.” (Az-Zalzalah 99:4-5)
And He says:
“On the Day when the enemies of Allah are gathered toward the Fire, they will be marshaled in rows (19) until, when they reach it, their hearing, their sight, and their skins testify against them regarding what they used to do. (20) They will say to their skins, ‘Why have you testified against us?’ They will reply, ‘Allah, who causes all things to speak, has made us speak; He created you the first time, and to Him you are being returned. (21) You did not seek to conceal yourselves lest your hearing, your sight, or your skins should testify against you, but you assumed that Allah did not know much of what you were doing. (22) Such was the assumption you entertained about your Lord; it has ruined you, so you have become among the losers.’” (Fuṣṣilat 41:19-23)
He also says:
“On that Day their tongues, their hands, and their feet will testify against them concerning what they used to do. (24) On that Day Allah will pay them their true recompense, and they will know that Allah is the Clear Truth.” (An-Nūr 24:24-25)
And He says:
“Today We will seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will bear witness to what they used to earn. (65) And if We willed, We could blind their eyes so they would race to the path—how then would they see? (66) And if We willed, We could transform them where they stand, so they would neither be able to go forward nor return.” (Yā Sīn 36:65-67)
And He says:
“And faces will be humbled before the Living …”
