and they will be returned to Allah, their true Master, and whatever they used to fabricate will desert them.” (Yunus 10:28–30)
Allah the Exalted also says, “On the Day He gathers them all together(1) He will say, ‘Company of jinn! You have taken much advantage of humankind …’—up to His words—‘Did there not come to you messengers from among yourselves, reciting My signs to you and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?’ They will say, ‘We bear witness against ourselves …’” (Al-Anʿam 6:128–130).
And He, Most High, says, “On that Day you will be presented; none of your secrets will remain hidden.” (Al-Haqqah 69:18)
Verses on this matter are exceedingly numerous, and in every relevant place we shall cite the Qur’anic passages that pertain to it.
It has already been recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Prophet ﷺ said, “You will meet Allah barefoot, naked and uncircumcised, ‘just as We began the first creation, We shall bring it back.’”(2) Similar reports come from ʿĀʾishah(3), Umm Salamah(4) and others.(5)
Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Abū Naṣr al-Tammār narrated to us; ʿUqbah al-Aṣamm narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, who said: I heard Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “People will be presented three times on the Day of Resurrection: two presentations involve disputation and excuses, and at the third the scrolls will scatter. Whoever is given his book in his right hand and is reckoned with an easy reckoning will enter Paradise, and whoever is given his book in his left hand will enter the Fire.”(6)
Imām Aḥmad said: Wakīʿ narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿAlī ibn Rifāʿah narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “People will be presented three times on the Day of Resurrection: the first two are dispute and excuses, and at the third the scrolls will fly into the hands—one person will grasp his with the right hand and another with the left.” Ibn Mājah likewise transmitted it from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, from Wakīʿ, with this chain.(7)
What is astonishing is that al-Tirmidhī recorded this ḥadīth from Abū Gharīb, from Wakīʿ, from ʿAlī ibn ʿAlī, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ … and he related something similar.(8)
Al-Tirmidhī then said: “This is not sound, because al-Ḥasan did not hear from Abū Hurayrah.” He added, “Some have transmitted it from ʿAlī ibn ʿAlī, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Mūsā, from the Prophet ﷺ.”
I say: al-Ḥasan does narrate from Abū Hurayrah in al-Bukhārī, though his report there is coupled with another narrator.
