Another narration states, “He never said, ‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense.’” (1)
Allah the Exalted says, “We shall turn to whatever deeds they did and reduce them to scattered dust.” (Al-Furqān 25:23)
And He, Most High, says about the works of the unbelievers, “But those who disbelieve—their deeds are like a mirage in a desert plain; the thirsty one supposes it to be water, yet when he comes to it he finds nothing there, but finds Allah there, and He settles his account; Allah is swift in reckoning.” (Al-Nūr 24:39)
Section
Al-Qurṭubī and others have said: Whoever’s good deeds outweigh his bad deeds—even by so much as a speck—enters Paradise; and whoever’s bad deeds outweigh his good deeds—even by a speck (2)—enters the Fire, unless Allah pardons him. Whoever’s good and bad deeds are exactly equal belongs to the people of al-Aʿrāf. The same is reported from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him).
I say: This is confirmed by His words, “Indeed, Allah does not wrong even the weight of an atom; and if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and grants from Himself a mighty reward.” (Al-Nisāʾ 4:40)
Yet what is the ruling on someone whose good deeds outweigh his bad deeds by a single good deed—or by several? Does he enter Paradise and rise through its ranks on account of all his good deeds, the sins that matched them having thereby been nullified? Or does he rise only by the surplus of good deeds left over after outweighing the sins, those sins having cancelled an equivalent number of good deeds and rendered them void? Likewise, if a person’s bad deeds exceed his good deeds by one sin or more, will he be punished in the Fire for the whole of his bad deeds, or only for the excess that outweighed his good deeds?
Mention of the presentation before Allah, Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection; the dispersal of the scrolls, and the Lord’s reckoning of His servants
Allah the Exalted says, “On the Day We set the mountains in motion you will see the earth laid bare, and We shall gather them together, leaving no one behind. They will be marshalled before your Lord in ranks: ‘You have come to Us just as We created you the first time. Yet you claimed We would never appoint for you a meeting.’ The Book will be set down, and you will see the guilty apprehensive about what is in it, and they will say, ‘Alas for us! What a book this is—it leaves nothing, small or great, without recording it!’ They will find whatever they did present before them, and your Lord wrongs no one.” (Al-Kahf 18:47–49)
He, Most High, also says, “The earth will shine with the light of its Lord; the Book will be set down; the prophets and the witnesses will be brought; and judgement will be passed between them with truth, and they will not be wronged. Every soul will be paid in full for what it has done; and He knows best what they do …” to the end of the sūrah. (Al-Zumar 39:69–75)
And He says, “You have certainly come to Us one by one, just as We created you the first time, and you have left behind you whatever We bestowed upon you. Nor do We see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners with Us. The bond between you has now been severed, and what you used to claim has failed you.” (Al-Anʿām 6:94)
And He says, “On the Day We gather them all together, We shall say to those who ascribed partners, ‘Stay where you are—you and your partners.’ Then We shall separate them, and their partners will say, ‘It was not us that you worshipped. Allah is sufficient as a witness between us and you; we were indeed unaware of your worship of us.’ There and then every soul will taste what it sent ahead …” (Yūnus 10:28–29)
